I specialize in tutoring middle school and high school students in math and science (including MCAS and SAT prep).

I have found as a teacher and a tutor that working one-on-one can make a huge difference in a student's understanding of the material. This applies to students who are struggling to grasp the material as well as those students seeking advanced understanding. (I love it when I am working with a student and I suddenly see in their face that he or she "gets it.")

I am licensed to teach chemistry and biology at the secondary level in Massachusetts and I have three years of experience teaching high school science. I was also an Instructor in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School for nine years.

Education
Ph.D. Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Tufts Medical School
M.S. Oceanography, University of Maine at Orono
B.S. Biology (magna cum laude), Tufts College of Liberal Arts
Valedictorian, Oakmont Regional High School

Often, students don't understand the material as it is being presented in class. I sit down with a student and explain the material so that the student can understand it. I like to ask questions so that the students discover the answers for themselves. This usually leads to higher quiz and test scores and to a higher course grade. I am a patient tutor and I tailor my instruction to fit my student's needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I took one year of inorganic chemistry, one year of organic chemistry and one year of biochemistry (all with labs) as an undergrad at Tufts. I also took one semester of physical chemistry. In graduate school, I took a course in chemical oceanography and a course in physical biochemistry. I am certified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to teach chemistry at the secondary level and I have taught high school chemistry (college prep and honors) for three years. I also have five years of experience tutoring students taking college prep, honors and AP chemistry classes.

I have a patient tutoring style and I try to help build my students' confidence as I work with them. I have worked with a variety of students who attend or who have attended both public and independent schools. I like tutoring because I can tailor my teaching to the needs of each individual student. I try to reduce any stress or anxiety than students might feel regarding chemistry and I help them to be successful.

Genetics

I got an A in Genetics as an undergraduate at Tufts University and graduated magna cum laude from Tufts with a BS in Biology. I went on to get my PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from Tufts Medical School where I studied bacterial genetics and molecular genetics. I then worked as a research scientist in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School for two years before I was appointed Instructor in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School. I spent nine years in the HMS Micro Department where I established and directed the Department's DNA Core Facility. I also have three years of experience teaching science at the secondary level. I am certified to teach high school biology and chemistry and am rated a Highly Qualified Teacher. I have a patient tutoring style and can explain concepts in multiple ways. The best part of tutoring for me is when I see the look on a student's face that shows they "get it."

Microbiology

I am a former Instructor in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School and I taught science at the secondary level for three years. Caring and extremely dedicated! — Peter has tutored my son for several months now in different areas of science. He has demonstrated competence and extreme sensitivity to my son's learning style. After starting tutoring with Peter, my son became much more comfortable with his weekly quizzes and started to do better on them. After the summer break and the start of the new academic year, it was my son who asked me if he could have P ...
