I currently have very limited tutoring sessions available in Andover.

Although math is not everyone's best subject, it doesn't have to be so stressful. Anxiety and discouragement often get in the way of students reaching their full potential in math.**

I have experience coaching students, focusing on positive reinforcement and teaching to each student's learning style. This is difficult to accomplish in a big classroom.

I teach outside the box using real world scenarios to make math tangible. I use examples relevant to a student's interests and visuals to help teach math concepts that are memorable. My goal is to eliminate fear and anxiety around math, while building on each student's strengths. When a student not only "gets it", but remembers it, the concepts can be applied to difficult problem-solving scenarios like those on the SAT and SSAT tests.

For middle and high school students, I also help with organizational and study skills. Preparing study guides with formulas and important information is a critical skill that can can be used for homework, studying, and future courses.

I have an educational background in Engineering and Applied Mathematics. My work experience ranges from consulting in software applications and networks to more recently, as a math specialist tutor in Andover, Massachusetts, and as a private tutor in Andover and its surrounding towns. I teach all levels of Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry and Pre-Calculus.

Test Preparation:
- Math SAT
- MTEL General Curriculum 03 Math Subtest
- MTEL Elementary Math 53, Middle School Math 47

I have fulfilled all state testing requirements for the Massachusetts teaching certificate in middle school mathematics.

Excellent recommendations available on WyzAnt.
Additional references are available upon request.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is often the turning point where students who once did well in math begin to have trouble. It is a cumulative subject where all the rules of arithmetic come together and need to be applied. I do a good job of simplifying the basic rules of Pre-algebra so that even the more complex problems can be broken down to the basics. Algebra is like a puzzle where you first have to look at the big picture, break down the pieces into "edges and middle pieces" and then the pieces can be systematically put together .

Algebra 2

I have extensive experience teaching Algebra II privately, and have excellent references and a good record for helping students that are struggling to improve their grades.
There are many ways to look at a problem in Algebra. Depending on the student's learning style, I teach different techniques to help solve problems, including tricks with factoring, divisibility and always include refreshers from Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Math is cumulative and every skill must be understood along the way.

Geometry

Geometry is quite different from Algebra and often times, students that excel in Algebra may have trouble with Geometry. Geometry is visual which can be helpful with the right examples. Proofs are more logical and can be mastered with the right end result in mind. The basics rules are often skimmed through but are essential to the process. I provide general study guides with formulas and theorems to help every student succeed.

Linear Algebra

My math background includes honors and AP courses through semesters of college Calculus. I also have an Engineering background using Linear Algebra.
I have been tutoring all levels of Algebra for several years, including Linear Algebra as part of Algebra I and SAT Math Prep.
I have excellent references from all past Algebra students.

MTLE

I have passed the MTLE licensure exams including Communications and Literacy and Middle School Mathematics. I have been tutoring for the General Curriculum Mathematics 03 exam for the past 2 years.

SAT Math

SAT Math preparation involves reviewing Algebra, Geometry, and Pre-Algebra topics learned mostly in Middle School. In addition, the questions require applying these topics in real world scenarios.
I offer tutoring based on each student's level of need to review or learn the skills, then work on applying them in practice test problems. Learning how questions are scored, and paying close attention to the often tricky wording within the questions, can make a difference in test outcome. I also offer strategies to overcome anxiety and boost confidence regarding testing.

I recommend starting to prepare at least 3-6 months prior to testing so there is less last-minute stress.

The roots are the values of x when y = 0. If you set the equation = 0, then one of the factors must be zero for the product to be zero. Therefore, you can set each factor to zero and solve for x.   x + 2 = 0 x = -2   x - 2 = 0 x = 2   So the roots...

One of the common challenges for many Algebra students is forgetting important concepts from Pre-Algebra. Without solid memorization of multiplication & division tables, factoring and simplifying are much more difficult. A better understanding... read more

Most students that struggle in math find Algebra is when things "start to get difficult". This is very common because Algebra brings all the basic rules of arithmetic together.
