The roots are the values of x when y = 0. If you set the equation = 0, then one of the factors must be zero for the product to be zero. Therefore, you can set each factor to zero and solve for x. x + 2 = 0 x = -2 x - 2 = 0 x = 2 So the roots...

I currently have very limited tutoring sessions available in Andover.

Although math is not everyone's best subject, it doesn't have to be so stressful. Anxiety and discouragement often get in the way of students reaching their full potential in math.**

I have experience coaching students, focusing on positive reinforcement and teaching to each student's learning style. This is difficult to accomplish in a big classroom.

I teach outside the box using real world scenarios to make math tangible. I use examples relevant to a student's interests and visuals to help teach math concepts that are memorable. My goal is to eliminate fear and anxiety around math, while building on each student's strengths. When a student not only "gets it", but remembers it, the concepts can be applied to difficult problem-solving scenarios like those on the SAT and SSAT tests.

For middle and high school students, I also help with organizational and study skills. Preparing study guides with formulas and important information is a critical skill that can can be used for homework, studying, and future courses.

I have an educational background in Engineering and Applied Mathematics. My work experience ranges from consulting in software applications and networks to more recently, as a math specialist tutor in Andover, Massachusetts, and as a private tutor in Andover and its surrounding towns. I teach all levels of Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry and Pre-Calculus.

Test Preparation:

- Math SAT

- MTEL General Curriculum 03 Math Subtest

- MTEL Elementary Math 53, Middle School Math 47

I have fulfilled all state testing requirements for the Massachusetts teaching certificate in middle school mathematics.

Excellent recommendations available on WyzAnt.

Betsy was the best thing that happened for my daughter in the area of math! My daughter was studying for an entrance exam for an advanced placement class and the only reason why she did well was because she worked with Betsy. Betsy covered areas that my daughter had not yet learned in school, and she also helped my daughter figure out short cuts in order to move through the test at a good pace. Betsy is one of those people who really understands her students as individuals, is very patient and kind. I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a math tutor at any level!

Betsy has helped my daughter tremendously. Since working with Betsy not only have her grades improved, more importantly, her confidence in math has improved as well.

Betsy is currently tutoring two of my children in Algebra 2. They have found her to be an excellent tutor. One child grasps concepts fairly quickly and Betsy challenges him with more complex problems. My other child struggles more and Betsy patiently walks her through the process. She gives clear, concise explanations and is more than willing to provide additional practice work. We are very happy with Betsy's tutoring and recommend her highly.

We are fortunate and lucky that Betsy is our son's math tutor. She is easily accessible, accommodating and has an exceptional commitment to her service. She makes sure that my son prepares before and after the session. After each session she sends me an excellent review of what was done and what needs to be done. This review will give a clear picture what she taught. She doesn't think her job is over after the session. She follows up with me and my son. She goes above and beyond to help my son, for example when he had a test and couldn't do an one-on-one session due to bad weather, she called the tutoring service and arranged for an online tutoring. She spent more than an hour of her time to set up. After just few classes, I see that my son's grades had improved a lot. I am very confident, with her excellent teaching skills and hard work she would make our son really do well in future.

Betsy has been working with my daughter for over a month and in that time, I have found a boost in my daughter's confidence in geometry and a significant improvement in applying the formulas to the various problems. Betsy's approach of breaking formulas down into smaller (and easier to apply) pieces has helped my daughter to approach the problems with an understanding of what the problem is looking to accomplish (and how to apply the pieces to solve the problem). Betsy is patient and is super available to help over text and email, if needed.

This was our first experience with WyzAnt and we couldn't be happier. Betsy treats our daughter like she is her own family. She connected with our daughter and has really helped to improve her grades over the past year. Our daughter is not only better in Math but a better student overall because of Betsy and how she has helped her with not only math but study habits in general. Betsy also goes above and beyond in our opinion in so many ways. I would highly recommend her!

Betsy's awesome. She tutored my daughter for SAT math and the results were amazing. She quickly assessed my daughter's knowledge base so they could focus specifically on the areas that needed work. My daughter's SAT score on math went up over 100 points and I am sure it was thanks to Betsy. Furthermore,Betsy is kind, encouraging and relates well to her students. My daughter really enjoyed her sessions with her.

Betsy has a great way of connecting to our son. He is on the shyer side and almost 12 years old. She has a great way of making learning math much more interesting. As a result, his math grades in school are improving and he is becoming more confident!!

Thanks Betsy!!!

Betsy goes the extra mile and is really working with Jennie so she gets the difficult concepts, and is right on top of her work and faxes corrections, and really sees the big picture of what my student needs to get done to pass the course. Excellent job!

Betsy has been very helpful to my 11 yr old daughter, Who felt very self conscience about going to a tutor. Betsy was great at putting her at ease and understanding how she felt! She was very flexible with scheduling and accommodating to reschedule! She was thorough about finding out what my daughter knew and what she needed help with! She explains how math is related! A very great tutor!!

Betsy has been great to work with! She was very accommodating regarding scheduling algebra tutoring sessions for my 8th grade daughter. Right away she had a real sense of what skills my daughter needed to review in order to move on in algebra. Betsy is very patient and has provided great tips for tackling math problems. Best of all, my daughter really likes her and enjoys the sessions! We feel fortunate to have found Betsy!

My daughter has always struggled with Math, by the time she was in seventh grade we decided that she needed some extra help. I couldn't be happier with the work Betsy did with my daughter. She is an amazing, caring human being!

Betsy not only helped my daughter with pre-algebra but she also helped her with low self-esteem, organization skills and anxiety related to math. As the months went by my daughter became a more confident, organized person with a positive attitude towards math and school. Betsy went above and beyond my expectations as a tutor and I highly recommend her services.

Our fourteen year old daughter has been taking math lessons with Betsy for the past two months. She has had other math tutors that understood math and knew how to teach it but Betsy has much more to offer. She spent most of the first lesson getting to know her new student as a person and wanted to know what her interests are and what makes her tick. She understands that many kids have anxiety about math and sometimes anxiety about other things that prevent the possibility of any productive learning. Betsy has shown us that no matter how much math you study and practice it is important to look at the big picture and try to resolve any other issues that might be interfering with learning anything. Meanwhile she is not just feeding math lessons but also understands what type of learner your child is to best fit a program to the individual. We give Betsy an A+ and highly recommend her as a tutor.

We have been so pleased with the work Betsy has been doing with our second grader. He has responded positively to her excellent way of helping him understand math and math concepts. Her helpful and caring manner, added to the proficiency of her teaching, makes for an enjoyable and productive learning experience for our seven-year old. We have been so pleased we found her!

Approved subjects are in **bold**.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra is often the turning point where students who once did well in math begin to have trouble. It is a cumulative subject where all the rules of arithmetic come together and need to be applied. I do a good job of simplifying the basic rules of Pre-algebra so that even the more complex problems can be broken down to the basics. Algebra is like a puzzle where you first have to look at the big picture, break down the pieces into "edges and middle pieces" and then the pieces can be systematically put together .

I have extensive experience teaching Algebra II privately, and have excellent references and a good record for helping students that are struggling to improve their grades.

There are many ways to look at a problem in Algebra. Depending on the student's learning style, I teach different techniques to help solve problems, including tricks with factoring, divisibility and always include refreshers from Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Math is cumulative and every skill must be understood along the way.

Geometry is quite different from Algebra and often times, students that excel in Algebra may have trouble with Geometry. Geometry is visual which can be helpful with the right examples. Proofs are more logical and can be mastered with the right end result in mind. The basics rules are often skimmed through but are essential to the process. I provide general study guides with formulas and theorems to help every student succeed.

My math background includes honors and AP courses through semesters of college Calculus. I also have an Engineering background using Linear Algebra.

I have been tutoring all levels of Algebra for several years, including Linear Algebra as part of Algebra I and SAT Math Prep.

I have excellent references from all past Algebra students.

I have passed the MTLE licensure exams including Communications and Literacy and Middle School Mathematics. I have been tutoring for the General Curriculum Mathematics 03 exam for the past 2 years.

SAT Math preparation involves reviewing Algebra, Geometry, and Pre-Algebra topics learned mostly in Middle School. In addition, the questions require applying these topics in real world scenarios.

I offer tutoring based on each student's level of need to review or learn the skills, then work on applying them in practice test problems. Learning how questions are scored, and paying close attention to the often tricky wording within the questions, can make a difference in test outcome. I also offer strategies to overcome anxiety and boost confidence regarding testing.

I recommend starting to prepare at least 3-6 months prior to testing so there is less last-minute stress.

One of the common challenges for many Algebra students is forgetting important concepts from Pre-Algebra. So many students complain that they never fully learned fractions, decimals and percentages or ratios, rates and applying math to word problems. Without solid memorization of multiplication & division tables, factoring and simplifying are much more difficult. A better understanding... read more

Most students that struggle in math find Algebra is when things "start to get difficult". This is very common because Algebra brings all the basic rules of arithmetic together. If you were relieved when the chapter on decimals or fractions was over, it turns out it is never over. The good news is that math concepts are all linked together and there is usually more than one way to... read more
