American history was always one of my favorite subjects in high school. I thoroughly enjoy learning and teaching about our country's history.
I currently work part time as a career counselor at an adult learning center, where I help adult learners discover their passions and create pathways to their career and educational goals. I teach a class called Pathways, in which we focus on resume writing, interviewing skills, planning for education necessary for goal careers, and most importantly using tools like Holland Codes, Myers-Briggs, and other tests to find appropriate career choices for students.
As a mentor with the Let's Get Ready program, I guided hundreds of students through the college application process, including SAT tutoring, college searches, help with college essays, and more. I am passionate about helping students get into the college of their dreams!
I have been a Teacher's Assistant in six elementary school classrooms (for semester-long placements) over the past five years. I have worked with students ranging in level from special needs to advanced, and have tutored one-on-one in reading, writing, phonics, science, math, geography, and history.
I have a strong background in the foundations of elementary science, particularly biology and chemistry.
My long-standing plan to become an English teacher is still underway. I took the Praxis exams for teaching high school English and passed all of them. Although I took a detour to go to graduate school, my passions for literature, grammar, and writing are still as strong as ever!
I worked as a GED tutor on and off for three years in Holyoke, MA. I worked with my students (who ranged in age from 17-65) on math, reading, writing, science, and history projects and problems to help them pass their GED.
My favorite books include To Kill a Mockingbird, Slaughterhouse-Five, Catcher in the Rye, Franny and Zooey, and Beloved.
For my first two years in college, I studied to be a literacy specialist. I have a strong background in phonics coursework.
In high school, I was my school newspaper's editor in chief, and I thoroughly enjoyed correcting the grammar and punctuation of my peers in order to make better-written articles. In college, I edited all of my friends' papers. I'm one of those grammar nerds who can not only correct grammar and spelling, but explain exactly why and how something should be punctuated differently.
As an educator, I am used to speaking in a room of 30+ students on a regular basis. However, I also have spoken in front of crowds of hundreds in order to discuss important international issues. I had to learn to project, speak slowly, and pause at correct times; additionally I had to learn to be aware of my posture and the way I presented myself. I would be happy to teach these skills to others who are speaking in front of others, whether it be a small or large group.
I have worked with students of all ages and ability levels on reading skills, including phonics and comprehension. As a TA in a first grade classroom, I worked one-on-one with students who were struggling to read for the first time. Later, I worked with adult students facing similar struggles in a GED program. I have also worked with advanced readers to encourage them to read more deeply and understand further meanings and implications of books, essays, poems, etc.
I have studied and read significant texts on Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Greek and Roman mythology.
For five years, I worked with Let's Get Ready, an SAT preparation organization, as a director and Head Verbal Coach. I have coached students in small groups and one-on-one in both the reading and writing sections of the SAT. I help students tackle all parts of the critical reading section, from vocabulary to passage-based reading comprehension.

I concentrated in sociology in my undergraduate education, and I am currently pursuing a MA in educational sociology.
After studying Spanish in high school and in college, I moved to Chile for six months to attain fluency in the language. I can read, write, and speak Spanish with ease.
I never got below 105% on a second grade spelling test. I'm still pretty proud of that fact!
As a former SAT tutor, I have an extraordinarily large vocabulary and have developed fun ways to teach hard vocabulary words to students who primarily speak English and Spanish. My favorite words are bamboozle and kerfuffle.
I am a certified yoga teacher, and have completed my 200-hour certification. I am trained in Iyengar-style yoga, and am familiar with Mysore-style as well. I studied and received my certification from Goodyoga in Brooklyn, NY.
