As a language student for the past six years, I understand the numerous difficulties that native English speakers face when it comes to learning a second language. I've tutored English speakers in Chinese for five years, and Chinese speakers in French for one year. In addition to this, I've tutored adult ESL for two years here in Boston.

Learning a foreign language can, unfortunately, prove to be a scary and time-consuming process for some. I'm wiling to work with students whose interest in learning English, French, or Chinese is either personal, recreational, or professional. I don't bite and I don't believe learning a different language should either!

Best of luck in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

My undergraduate degree is in Chinese Language and Literature from Boston University. As of 2014, I have been studying Chinese for over six years. I have conducted interviews and ESL lessons in Chinese, and have even translated a short story by a modern Chinese author for my thesis project. During my last two years at Boston University, I worked as a Chinese tutor for ROTC students, teaching beginners as well as intermediate students.

English

I have taught ESL to international students for the past three years, in addition to tutoring literature and writing skills to both international and American college students. My experiences as an English tutor also include instructing high school students in English literature, focusing on vocabulary, theme, and analysis of such works as: Romeo and Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Of Mice and Men. As a result of my experiences, I believe that I am qualified to address the varied needs of students seeking support in English.

ESL/ESOL

With two years of experience as an Adult ESL Tutor in Boston teaching English to Chinese immigrants, I have developed a great passion for teaching ESL/ESOL. In addition to tutoring ESL to adults, I've also served as a literacy tutor to high school students, most of whom were primarily Spanish and Haitian-Creole speakers, for three months.

I would like to continue working as an ESL/ESOL tutor with international students in the Metro Boston Area, so please feel free to contact me if you are interested.

French

While my undergraduate degree is in Chinese Language and Literature from Boston University, I maintained a personal and academic study of French for the past two years. I have tutored both English and Chinese speakers in French on campus, in addition to assisting with early childhood French classes.

Prealgebra

I have extensive experience in preparing for exams that test prealgebra skills, such as the NYC Regents Exams, the NYC Specialized High School Entrance Exams, the SAT, and the GRE. I tutored K-8 ELA and math for three years during high school, and have much experience working with adolescents. Teaching methods that I have found most effective include patience, extensive diagram drawing, and calculator instruction.

TOEFL

With an undergraduate degree in Chinese Language and Literature, I have spent the last two years teaching ESL to Chinese immigrants who wish to prepare for the TOEFL exam. I have also tutored Chinese, college-level students who wish to improve their scores and skills on the TOEFL exam.

Very professional and patient — I had one session with Rocco this week for the first time, and it went smoothly and educationally. A tutor with fluency in other languages like Rocco certainly discerns the blocking stones a language-learner most likely encounters. Patience, humor, and passion incarnate in his teaching style winnow a great tutor from a lesser one. In one word, he is a must-have tutor in language learning. ...
