Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have taught in a classroom and tutored students individually in all aspects of English, including reading skills. My approach is to have the student read aloud alternating pages with the tutor. This approach enhances self-esteem and increases proficiency. Students love to be read to and, in turn, become confident in their own reading abilities.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught Special Education for Jefferson Parish Public Schools for three years. The students were classified as LD (learning disabled), BD (behaviorally disturbed), as ED ( emotionally disturbed). It was a very challenging position. More recently, I tutored students who were evaluated and classified as having attention deficit disorder at St. Martin's Protestant Episcopal School in Metairie. I found them to lack self-confidence and to dislike reading. What worked very well was reading orally with these students, gradually allowing them to read along with me. This piqued their interest in the story and built their self-confidence. I was able to change a failing grade to a passing grade, even a C or B.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught sixth grade English as well as tutored students in grades K-6 in reading, phonics, spelling, and writing. I have a BA and MA degree in English Education. I have taught in both public and private schools in the Greater New Orleans area.

English

Both my B.A. and M.A. degrees are in English Education. I am a Louisiana certified Secondary English teacher valid for life. I have taught in the Greater New Orleans school system in both public and private schools. I have tutored students with learning disabilities who progressed from a failing grade to a high C or B.

Grammar

I have taught and tutored English, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and writing skills for over twenty years. I learned basic grammar from Warriner's textbooks which was the gold standard for teaching grammar.

Literature

I have taught English, American, and World literature to Secondary-level students for over 20years. I enjoy teaching literature and share this love of literature with each student. I break down the book or short story into manageable sections. I discuss theme and other literary devices used by the author. Before each tutoring session, I research the piece on the Internet to increase the enjoyment of the student.

Phonics

I am qualified to tutor phonics due to my teaching and tutoring background in English, reading. writing, and grammar. I would begin teaching phonics with pronunciation of each letter in the alphabet. I am patient and experienced with young children. I have two granddaughters, three and six, both of whom I have read to extensively. A solid knowledge of phonics is necessary in order to teach reading.

Proofreading

I have a B.A. and M.A. degree in English from a small college in New England. My advanced degree is from UNO. My proofreading skills have been honed from correcting student papers. Additionally, I have worked as a technical editor and medical editor, where proofreading skills were part of my job description.

Reading

I have a BA and MA degree in English Education. I have taught reading and writing skills for over 20 years. I believe that oral reading is extremely important in a tutoring session. When the student hears his/her voice, they rise to the occasion and try their best to read clearly with comprehension. I have had great success in teaching students to read at their grade level.

SAT Writing

I have taught writing beginning with the simple paragraph. The topic sentence is very important. I have over twenty years experience teaching English including writing essays, term papers, and theses.

Study Skills

During my time spent tutoring, I have counseled students in the proper study techniques. Time management and organization of paperwork and subject matter are key elements of studying for a test. Proper study skills can be mastered by anyone within a short period of time.

Vocabulary

I have taught vocabulary, including reading and writing skills, to children of all ages. I have taught English in both public and private schools in the Greater New Orleans area for over 20 years. I believe that a good vocabulary is the cornerstone of good writing.

Writing

I have taught and tutored writing in both public and private schools. Learning how to write a three paragraph essay is very important. It starts with a good topic sentence and ends with the conclusion.
