I am a trained historian, holding the M.Phil in American history from Columbia University where I was a fellowship doctoral candidate. After college graduation I worked for four years in the U.S. Senate as a press secretary to the late John Heinz. I'm a published writer with expertise in American and European history, African American history and literature, American literature and American studies. I ghost-wrote the posthumous memoirs of the late broadcast journalist David Brinkley (Brinkley's Beat, 2002), have published in several peer-reveiwed journals and published books, and presented papers at national conferences. I'm well-traveled in the US, Europe and Mexico which broadens my ability to contextualize and provide illustrations to students.

In addition to my dissertation manuscript, which examines a notorious lynching in South Carolina, I am working on an in-depth article for publication in a national magazine about education reform in New Orleans, along with a profile of a Peruvian retablos artisan.

I love American history and literature and believe that literacy in the humanities is integral to democracy, for molding critical thinkers and informed citizens. I work well with young people and can tailor sessions to the individual needs and goals of students.

Thank you for considering me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a published writer with an excellent understanding of grammar and vocabulary.

Social Studies

I am qualified to tutor in social studies because I have studied American history and culture at the doctoral level and read extensively in world history, geography, civics and political philosophy. I enjoy the subject immensely.

Study Skills

I am a doctoral candidate in American history at Columbia University in New York City. Prior to returning to graduate school, I worked as a press secretary to a US Senator in Washington D.C. Organization is essential to performance, whether it's in the classroom as a student or teacher, or in a professional setting. One of my strengths is an ability to break assignments or a menu of deadlines into discrete components as a way to map out the desired goal. The students I've worked with have all made progress in their respective fields as a result of developing a new mindset and approach to workloads that seem overwhelming otherwise.
