I am a natural born tutor. I tutored at the age of five! In my Montessori pre-school, 5 year-olds helped the 3 & 4 year-olds with their learning tasks. After I graduated pre-school, as an elementary school kid, I used to go back to the Montessori School and tutor the young ones. As a university student, I tutored in the university Tutoring Center.

I have an M.A. in English Teaching, a B.A. in French and years of experience. I tutor all aspects of English Language Arts or language-based subjects, such as history, sociology, religion, philosophy, and geography to native speakers of English or speakers of English as a Second or other language. I also tutor Intermediate French, Basic Spanish, and Study Skills. I tutor mainstream learners and students with learning and processing differences (dyslexia, ADD, ADHD) from primary school to adults. I tutor lower levels of math & science as well.

My approach is practical, holistic, natural, sensitive, multi-sensory and adjusted to meet the age level, immediate and long-term needs of each student. My approach is based on current studies of brain science, learning, and education, and on personal experience of having been a successful student of language and other subjects.

For some students, if necessary and approved, I meet with parties involved in the student's success: diagnosticians, school learning specialists or academic deans, parents, and professors or teachers to assess the weakness and areas to be addressed. I write up a general plan and goals, tutor, and monitor student progress throughout the school term or year with teachers and learning specialists and parents. I prepare students for tests and exams. Schools include St. Paul and St. Martin’s Episcopal, St. Louise McGhee School for Girls, Isidore Newman, Sacred Heart Academy, St. Stephens, St. Mathew the Apostle, Kehoe France, and others. I've tutored many students. I'd love to help you too!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am an English language specialist. Teaching Reading Comprehension and Standardized test taking skills are two of several areas of my expertise. I have years of experience teaching and tutoring English and standardized test-taking skills. I take the student through steps, practice, and procedures that improve her ability to not only pass the test but that also increases his/her awareness and knowledge of language that will improve overall reading comprehension, including vocabulary development and writing, for a lifetime.

ACT Reading

ACT reading requires skills in grammar, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. My master's degree in teaching English prepared me well for teaching and tutoring reading comprehension, which I've taught and tutored for the past 25 years. In all of the major English Language Programs in which I was a full time faculty member, I taught reading comprehension. I've tutored adults and children in all language skills, all of which are relevant to ACT reading. All verbal skills sections of standardized test are essentially asking a test-taker to apply the same language skills, all of which I am expert in teaching and tutoring at all age levels.

ADD/ADHD

For about a decade, I have tutored students with ADD and ADHD. All students are different in their degrees of attention challenge, choices, and types of attention support. Some students with ADD who have difficulty focusing in class are able to focus well in a one-on-one tutoring situation. I present information to the student in ways that he/she can manage and digest in effective periods of time. I also present and coach the student to adapt effective school & study habits. I am generally knowledgeable about test-taking accommodations that schools and testing institutions are required to provide students with ADD.

Dyslexia

For a decade, I have tutored students diagnosed with dyslexia. Brain science in the last 20 years has revealed much about the brain and learning processes, including reading and dyslexia. Research in the field of reading has proven that multi-sensory learning is THE answer to dyslexia. Three prominent and successful systems of multi-sensory learning are Lindmood-Bell, Orton-Gillingham, and the Wilson Approach. I have had much success using with my students the Lindamood System of Phonemic Awareness for the "decoding" stage of reading and "Visualizing/Verbalizing for Reading Comprehension, memory, and writing.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have Master's degree (M.A.)in English Teaching, over 12 years of tutoring, and over 20 years of teaching experience, much of which includes the teaching and tutoring English language and language-based subjects, such as History, Sociology, and even science and math, since reading comprehension of science & math text books is a large part of the learning. I have also tutored lower to intermediate levels of math as well as French & Spanish. I have tutored elementary and high school students from some of the most quality schools in the area.

English

I am an English language specialist. I teach and tutor any aspect of English: grammar, reading comprehension, phonics, phonemic awareness, oral reading, vocabulary, writing, speaking, pronunciation, accent reduction. I teach to speakers of English as a Second Language and to native speakers of English of all ages. I also tutor any English-language based subject such as history, sociology, geography, religion, and philosophy. I also do copy editing.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's degree in English Teaching and 20 years of experience teaching and tutoring ESL to students of all ages. I teach and tutor all aspects of the English language: reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing, speaking, pronunciation, oral reading, listening comprehension, TOEFL (test of English as a foreign language) training, language study skills and literature study skills. I know clever tricks to remember and incorporate Internet features to independently develop your English language skills.

Phonics

I have trained in and successfully used the Lindamood Bell System of Phonemic Awareness, known as LIPS. It is a effective, fun, multi-sensory system of teaching reading based in recent studies in brain science and learning.

Reading

I have a wide range of experience tutoring all aspects of reading to many ages of students: "decoding," which is the phonics-based skills of reading, the work of which includes practice of oral reading; reading comprehension, understanding the meaning of new vocabulary in context, using context clues; "pre-reading/predicting" for better comprehension, and "close reading"/analytical reading for older students; skimming, scanning, reading for test taking; reading for memory, to name a few of the skills and tasks involved in the reading process.

Sign Language

I studied sign language in elementary school & college. I used to be quite fluent; now I incorporate sign language in English language enrichment and as a memory device. It's a fun way to enhance student awareness and language learning.

Speech

I've taught speech and pronunciation in all of the major English Language Programs in which I was a full time faculty member. At Tulane University, I taught a speech class in which I taught the great speech of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We used video to apply principles of good speech, analysis, and critique for improvement. I've tutored adults in foreign and regional accent modification/reduction, in which I taught speech production using the Lindamood Belle Program of Phonemic awareness and principles of speech therapy. I've taught religious ministers, professionals, and students to become better public speakers and better communicators through the technical aspects and art of effective speech and communication for public speaking, conversation, discussion, and debate.

Study Skills

I've been a successful student or teacher all my life; I've learned and taught study skills as an integral part of learning other subjects or as a focused topic of tutoring sessions. I can improve the study skills of all level of student from organization of materials and study steps to effective text book usage, note-taking, and test preparation.

TOEFL

I've taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for over 25 years in various University and College Intensive English Language Programs. I teach every aspect of the English language: Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary Development, Listening Comprehension, Grammar, Composition, and Speech (Pronunciation, Speech, Accent Modification). My second language teaching experience comes from first hand language learning experience. I've studied French in France and Spanish in Mexico and Spain. I've taught ESL in Japan and Morocco, North Africa. All my experience informs my present teaching, which focuses sensitively and effectively on the needs of my students.
