Are you looking for help in Writing? I can help you to write an essay or report. Is History a mystery to you? Beyond the list of dates and events are there trends of commonality or contrast to the history of a particular people.

I am a Harvard graduate who has used the written and spoken word for his living. Over a period of time I can help you to improve your skills, vocabulary and understand the complexities of English prose. Today's young people have a hard time with writing because e-mail and texting put being quick over being clear. Using stock phrases and three letter abbreviations gives the impression that somehow, the writer is leaving it to the reader to figure out what s/he means. Does typing OMG show your sense of being startled? or are you offended? or is it that you are shocked? Good writing requires going beyond transcribing speech to presenting clear thoughts.

Excellent prose is an art using a set of skills. My approach is to take your drafted piece and break it down with you, see the need for a clear thesis, present an overview of your argument and then to offer clear and cogent examples to support your thesis. What's more, you then need to conclude your argument and to apply it. Grammar, diction, 'rhetoric'--the skill of how you present ideas--all count. The words you choose, the length of sentences, your punctuation guiding the reader, the sequencing of thoughts all move your argument forward. I can tutor you in each of these talents to make you an artful writer and speaker.

History is a subject that has been made boring and tedious. I can help you see the important trends in Western Civilization from the ancients to the rise of Christianity through the economic collapse of the Middle Ages into the rise of the arts and sciences of the past 500 years. History is a great story. Let me start you on that delightful tale. As a retired minister, I have a special knowledge of Church History and the theologies that have been in effect over the centuries. What do you make of Pope Francis?

Maury, a Victorian writer had it that "English is the most difficult, arbitrary and careful of all languages". Whether this is still so may be debated, but the constant need to study the tongue cannot. There is a fashion to express oneself more readily in jangled words than clear ones--that shaggy writing or speech is somehow more honest or direct. In fact, it is lazy and leaves the impression that the speaker is either dull or dull-witted. Using English well takes effort. To master the awkward and arcane of the language means to express oneself with talent and beauty and so win over the reader and listener.

I hope to help you, or your child, to begin this effort.

Public Speaking

I served in ordained ministry for 22 years. In that time, I preached monthly for the first two years, weekly for the second two and 6 days a week for the other years. I have also given public presentations, taught to large groups and spoken to particular groups or organizations. I have always been well received and complimented for my oratory intellectually as well as rhetorically. I have had people in nine different parishes be impressed enough to favorably compliment me on the homilies. These were communities as diverse as Dorchester and as cultivated as Hingham.

Skilled writer and speaker. I have earned my living with language for twenty years. I can help you with the details of organizing researched material, creating a thesis statement, exampling in subordinate sections, conclusion and projection of thesis's significance.
