Education
I have a PhD. in Molecular Biophysics from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida, and a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Miami, Miami, Florida.
Related Work Experience
From 1995-2008, I was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Xavier University of Louisiana, New Orleans. During the thirteen years at Xavier, I taught Anatomy, Physiology, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Introduction to Scientific Literature, Histology Laboratory, and Biology. The Biology Laboratory course had a vocabulary building component.
Tutoring Experience
I have lots of experience tutoring younger students, preschool through high school, including home-schooled students. Whether the need is for reading comprehension, elementary math, prealgebra, algebra, biology, chemistry, study skills, or other specific subjects, I tailor each lesson to fit a student's learning style. I believe learning should be fun. All of my students and I manage to have fun in our own way.
I have been a WyzAnt tutor since May 2010. During that time, I have accumulated over 140 hours tutoring preK-12th students and adults with ADD. As I do for all of my students, I design every lesson to accommodate each individual.
I have a passion for preparing students for the GED. For a year and a half I was the Program Manager at Kedila Family Learning Center in New Orleans. Kedila is a nonprofit organization that prepares young adults for the GED test. Likewise, I also volunteered at another non-profit, Covenant House, for a year preparing young adults to take the GED.
I also tutor students in preparation for standardized tests. In graduate school I taught for The Princeton Review. They excel in teaching the content AND the test taking strategies to score the most points. I use The Princeton Review materials, and my experience as a Princeton Review instructor, to tutor students for the ACT, SAT, GED, ASVAB, and PCAT.
I tutor ESL. I love to interact with people of different cultures! I lived in Miami for about ten years where you can hear just about any language in the world as you walk down the street. I therefore learned how to communicate effectively and efficiently so that I could take advantage of Miami's rich cultural diversity. As a result, I found myself teaching English to people who became my friends and neighbors.
I am available Monday-Thursday from 8:00AM-9:00PM and on Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM. I am also available on Saturday and Sunday at any mutually agreeable time.
Cancellation Policy
Please understand that I tutor many students. Therefore, I require 24 hours advanced notice for canceled, skipped, or rescheduled lessons; otherwise your account will be billed for one-half the rate and duration of the normal lesson.
