Your Sonoma County Science and Math Tutor!
I specialize in tutoring chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics (algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, calculus (single and multivariable)).
As the top student in AP physics, I began tutoring in this subject eight years ago. Since then I have completed a rigorous training in the sciences, earning a BS in Biophysics and an MS in Chemistry at UC San Diego. I began medical school at the University of Queensland in January. As an undergraduate I joined in several scientific research projects at universities all around the United States, including UPenn. I now know firsthand many of the ways that science in the classroom is applied in research, and I bring this perspective into my tutoring sessions.
My Tutoring Approach
Helping students improve their understanding of difficult coursework boosts their grades, and ultimately their curiosity in learning the material. From fluid physics to advanced inorganic chemistry, I focus on tackling the toughest areas first, and directly engage the student through questions rather than uninteresting lecture. I frequently use analogies and "real world" examples to brighten the material, making it easier to understand and remember.
Credibility and Experience
After private AP physics tutoring in High School, I went on to become the only undergraduate tutor working in the UCSD Physics Tutorial Center at the time. Later as a graduate student I became a Chemistry lab TA, teaching sections of students lab skills and chemistry concepts, as well as leading review sessions to over 70 students on my own. I currently tutor many students in science and math, one-on-one and in groups, and work as a substitute teacher for Sonoma Country Day School. Before all of this I worked as a Boy Scout Camp Counselor for 3 Summers, teaching outdoor skills with sensitivity, patience, and humor, to boys ages 10 -16.
This is the most exciting part of math. Numbers finally come alive! Students' natural approach to this is often a fearful one, but with the right guidance and instruction, this can turn to interest and curiosity. At this stage, I relate algebra back to our everyday lives as much as possible. I also keep encouragement strong since understanding at this level is so critical to student's success in future math courses.
Trained for 6 years in baseball in the Rancho Cotati little league. Expert in pitching mechanics, hitting strategies, and basic gameplay. Finished my sixth season as an allstar starting pitcher, and having led my team to win the league championship.
I finished an MS in chemistry in June of 2010, and have been working as a Teacher's assistant and tutor since then. During this program I taught chem lab to groups of 15 to 20 students, and led review sessions to over 70 students at a time. I now specialize in tutoring inorganic, organic, and biochemistry at the university level, as well as high school and middle school level chemistry.
Received an "A" in differential equations at UCSD. This course taught ordinary differential equations: exact, separable, and linear; constant coefficients, undetermined coefficients, variations of parameters. I also learned series solutions, Laplace transforms, techniques for engineering sciences, and computing symbolic and graphical solutions using Matlab.
After scoring an A- in Linear Algebra at UCSD, I became knowledgeable in the following topics: matrix algebra, determinants, linear subspaces, bases of Euclidean spaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, orthogonal matrices, diagonalization of symmetric matrices, and computing symbolic and graphical solutions using Matlab. To bring this subject to life during tutoring, I tie in real world applications, some of which can be quite surprising.
I scored in the 95th percentile on this exam, without ever taking the MCAT course. I firmly believe that with the right study skills and preparatory work, students can significantly improve their scores. I offer tutoring for all sections of the MCAT as well as student-specific instruction for conquering key weaknesses on this test.
I have gained a real-world understanding for this subject by taking graduate seminars, and having worked in an organic chemistry research lab. After 3 quarters (plus lab) of undergraduate ochem, I have developed a solid foundation in the fundamentals as well. The UCSD courses I have taken in this subject are as follows:
Chem 209, 250, 140A-C, 143A
