My experience teaching English as a second language began in 1976 when my husband was in the Air Force. I taught the wives of servicemen who were returning to the US after the Vietnam war. Most of these wonderful women were from southeast Asia. They could speak some English, but their reading and writing skills were minimal. Many of them needed to have a driver's license and most wanted to study for their citizenship. I trained as a Laubach Literacy Tutor through the base chapel program and was director of the program for 2 years at Beale
Air Force Base. I have a life long certification from the state of California. I also taught ESL classes for Tarrant County Adult Education in Arlington, Texas. Most of my students during that time were from Mexico. Adult Education in Tarrant Countyin the 1980s was also taught in libraries in learning centers equipped with computers. I was the teacher in the Euless Public Library and taught basic education classes, English as a second language, and high school diploma classes, also GED studies. These classes were self paced but programmed and followed a designated curriculum. It was such a privilege to be a part of this great program in Texas.
I like to do some pretesting to find out what a student already knows. Then, working together we fill in the gaps in learning and move forward at a pace comfortable for the student. Proficiency can be reached in 12 to 24 months, meeting 1 to 3 times per week for an hour each time.
I look forward to helping you read and write English with joy and enthusiasm.
