Hi, my name is John. Let me tell you about myself. I have a BS degree in Mathematics, a BS degree in Civil Engineering, an MS degree in Civil Engineering, and a PhD in Engineering Mechanics, which most universities refer to as Applied Mathematics.

I am a Civil Engineer and have spent several years as a developer of residential subdivisions. I have also served for a few years as a project manager in the design of industrial projects. Additionally, I have been on the faculty of several universities and colleges, including LSU and the University of Houston. So, I have both theoretical and practical knowledge and experience.

I have taught and/or tutored various subjects at the university level in Math, such subjects as Algebra, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Advanced Topics in Mathematics such as Fourier Series, Bessel Functions, etc.; and in Engineering, such subjects as Statics, Dynamics, Advanced Dynamics, Strength of Materials, Structural Analysis, and the Theory of Elasticity.

My teaching style is very informal, and it is very important to me that I make students understand all aspects of anything I am teaching them. So, asking them questions about their understanding of a given point and encouraging them to not be intimidated by their not understanding something and to ask questions about anything that is unclear, are the very essence of the dialogue that I want to establish with them.

I strongly feel that I have succeeded with a student only when the light dawns and understanding comes. And I will work at it until that is the case.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have many years' experience teaching and tutoring Algebra, and have helped many students in their understanding of it.

I think I am very good at getting to the impediments that prevent a student's understanding of the concepts in Algebra and effectively increasing their ability to work problems and to be prepared for tests.

Algebra 2

Algebra is the subject that I have the most experience teaching and tutoring, more than 20 years, in fact.

I think I am very good at getting to the impediments that prevent a student's understanding of the concepts in Algebra and effectively increasing their ability to work problems and to be prepared for tests.

One thing though, if you are having difficulty, please contact me as early in the course as possible, so that I can offer maximum help.

Calculus

I have many years' experience teaching and tutoring Calculus, and have helped many students in their understanding of it.

It is one of my favorite subjects, and I really enjoy getting to the impediments that prevent a student's understanding of the concepts in Calculus and effectively increasing their ability to work problems and to be prepared for tests.

Calculus is a beautiful subject; I like to be a part of seeing students "get it."

Civil Engineering

I have been a practicing Civil Engineer for many years and have supervised a considerable number of engineering designs, both for residential subdivisions and for projects in industry.

I have taught various subjects involved in Civil Engineering curricula such as Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, Structural Analysis, etc.

I have considerable experience in tutoring in these subjects, also. I am good at helping students in these areas to improve their grades. If you need help, please contact me as early on in the course as possible for maximum benefit.

Differential Equations

I have many years' experience tutoring Differential Equations and have helped many students in their understanding of it.

I think I am very good at getting to the impediments that prevent a student's understanding of the concepts involved and effectively increasing their ability to work problems and to be prepared for tests.

I have written a brief paper on solving linear differential equations of the first order, which I give to my students. They have told me it has helped them in their understanding of how to solve these kinds of problems.

This can be a difficult subject for some students, so please contact me as early in the course as possible, so that I can offer maximum help.

Geometry

Geometry is a neat subject; an example of what you can learn in your first exposure to analytical thinking, which in mathematics involves stating a Theorem and then proving it to be true; that is, Theorem and Proof, one after the other until an entire body of knowledge is developed.

That's a lot of words for what is really a fairly easy subject to understand - it's just a new way of thinking, mathematically speaking. But once you get it, it's kind of fun.

I'm good at teaching it and know I can help students in their understanding of it.

GRE

Since this exam is based on general knowledge in multiple areas, it is an easy one to prepare for; a general review of the subject of the exam should be sufficient to obtain a good score.

I can provide that review, and if your mind is open to it, it's kind of fun.

Linear Algebra

I have written a 200-page paper on Linear Algebra and Tensor Analysis, so I know the power of this branch of mathematics. I have several years' experience teaching and tutoring Linear Algebra and have helped several students in their understanding of it.

My most recent student taking Linear Algebra and Differential Equations came to me through WyzAnt after failing his first test. I was able to help him to earn an 85 on his final exam and a C in the course, after a very poor beginning.

I think I am very good at getting to the impediments that prevent a student's understanding of the concepts involved and effectively increasing their ability to work problems and to be prepared for tests.

This can be a difficult subject for some students, so please contact me as early in the course as possible, so that I can offer maximum help.

Precalculus

Calculus is a beautiful subject that I have taught as well as tutored many times. However, for young students it represents a little different way of thinking that they have to adjust to.

To me that's what Precalculus is, namely, exposing students to this new way of critical thinking in math. Once they understand it and get used to it, many more kinds of practical problems can be understood and the answers easily calculated.

I know I can present this new way of thinking carefully in a way that students can understand and become comfortable with, and consequently be prepared for Calculus itself.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is an easy subject; it really ought to be about a one month course, not an entire semester. The theory is brief, being the relationship between angles and sides of triangles, mainly.

It's just a new way of thinking, mathematically speaking, but an easy one to learn. And once you get used to it, it's kind of fun.

I'm good at teaching it and know I can help students in their understanding of it.
