I offer clear explanations tailored to the learner. I enjoy demonstrating the process of building the concepts at hand, so that the learner is guided as if by an usher, shedding light to the path ahead through the aisles of a dark auditorium to swiftly arrive at the seat at the start of a performance.
As a private tutor, academic mentor, community outreach instructor, teaching assistant, college mathematics & foreign language instructor, and a parent, I have been a practicing student of effective teaching and learning for over 25 years. Post-tutorial and end-of-semester feedback by former tutees, students, and parents have often included exuberant appreciation for having helped reach their goal of understanding.
I have successfully taught Pre-Calculus and Calculus as a university teaching assistant for several academic terms. I also have taught Pre-Calculus and Calculus as an instructor at the University of Michigan while a graduate student.
Students in my discussion sections of approximately 30 students generally performed well above average on uniform mid-term and final exams administered course-wide in lecture courses with enrollment exceeding 500 students. My former students have provided very positive end-of-semester feedback on their learning experiences in both differential and integral calculus.
I have served as a mentor at the Mathematics & Science Student Center at Cabrillo College and provided academic and career guidance to students aspiring to enter a field of their choice. In my own search for an alternative career as a career changer, I pursued a 2nd graduate degree and had ample opportunities to engage in various career guidance literature and activities at the University of Michigan Career Center. What I took away from my experience can be summarized in a quote which I believe provides an anchor to career selection and pursuit: Where your talents meet the needs of the world, therein lies your vocation.
I have taken a rigorous 1-year course sequence in linear algebra & differential equations for mathematics and science majors as an undergraduate at a liberal arts college recognized nationally for its academics. I received a solid A for my coursework in both semesters and have successfully assisted my peers in understanding the various concepts and methods used to prove theorems and/or solve problems.
I lived and went to school in Germany, including a college prep school (known as Gymnasium (as opposed to Realschule or Hauptschule)), for several years during my formative years. I continued to take German classes in high school in the U.S. (received a score of 5 on the AP German test) and have taken college courses in Advanced German & Translation as well as in German Literature. I also have taken a 1-year sequence of graduate courses in Business German Practices and earned a grade of A- on a formal test on Business German proficiency (Pruefung Wirtschaftsdeutsch International) offered by the Goethe Institute.
I have taken a formal college course in computer information systems which included an introduction to MS Access in its curriculum. After earning the grade of A upon completing the course, I have applied and further increased my knowledge of Access in a professional setting for a number of years in the context of actuarial analysis at leading insurance companies. Most recently, I transformed the way data for a monthly dashboard (for senior managers, showing actual to expected ratios of claims & premiums by state) was processed earlier this year. Originally, the dashboard had relied on data processed in Excel, but now it draws data processed in Access.
In addition to many years of private tutoring in Pre-calculus, I have successfully taught Pre-calculus (and Calculus) as a university teaching assistant for several academic terms. I also have taught Pre-Calculus (and Calculus) as an instructor at the University of Michigan while a graduate student.
Students in my discussion sections (of approximately 30 students per section) generally performed well above average on uniform mid-term and final exams administered course-wide in lecture courses with enrollment exceeding 500 students. My former students have provided very positive end-of-semester feedback on their learning experience.
Awesome Tutor — Very patient with me. When I have a test he works in an extra session if I want it. Calculus would be hard to pass without him ...
