I have had the good fortune of tutoring several high school and college students in math and science over the years. When I first start tutoring someone, s/he is often frustrated and discouraged, so my first objective is to get his/her confidence back. That is even more important than the subject matter, as important as the subject matter is. Once the person's confidence returns, then s/he will be more receptive to what I am teaching, and significant improvement will follow.

One person came to me a few years back having flunked two chemistry exams. I was able to work with this person and, through his dedication, he improved significantly. He graduated last year with a degree in pharmacy. Another person I taught failed the first chemistry quiz of the semester (2 out of 10). I worked with this person, and he went on to do very well in the course.

The approach that I take is that, as long as students don't give up on themselves, I won't give up on them either, regardless of what their grades are. I know someone who got a C- in the first chemistry course that he took, then got an A in the second one. The same can happen for other struggling students as well.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored several students over the years in math and would be honored to have the opportunity to do so again.

Algebra 2

I have tutored several students over the years in chemistry, which makes extensive use of algebra, and I would be honored to have the opportunity to tutor in either subject.

Chemistry

I have tutored several high school and college students in general chemistry over the years, and I would be happy to serve in that capacity again.

MCAT

I have a B.S. in Chemistry, an M.S. in Medicinal Chemistry, and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry. In the process of obtaining my education, I have taken courses in all of the science related subjects covered on the test (General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology, and Physics). In addition, I am qualified to tutor in all of those subjects through WyzAnt and have already successfully tutored in three of them (General Chemistry, Organic, Chemistry, Biology), both in person and online.

Organic Chemistry

I have an M.S. degree in Medicinal Chemistry, which is described on the University of Washington website as "a discipline with a traditional focus on organic synthetic chemistry with the broad goals of drug discovery and optimization" (website reference: http://sop.washington.edu/medchem). My thesis research included the organic synthesis of inhibitors of Carboxypeptidase G-2. Additionally, when I was a graduate student, I served as a teaching assistant for organic chemistry laboratory. I have already served as a general chemistry tutor for several students, and would be honored to use that tutoring experience to help organic chemistry students as well.

Physical Science

I have had the good fortune of tutoring several students in science over the years and would welcome the opportunity to serve in that capacity again.
