I used to teach English and Latin at the high school level for six years in Ohio before moving to this area with my husband. I am waiting for the perfect secondary teaching position down here, but I want to continue helping students with their studies.

I obviously love working with students of all ages, but my specialty is grades 5-12. I was salutatorian of my high school class, so I feel confident assisting students with study skills in multiple subjects and helping them prepare for high-stakes exams.

I graduated with high honors from Ohio Wesleyan University with dual bachelor degrees in English Literature with the Honor's Writing Option and Humanities-Classics with a concentration in Latin.

I have current Kentucky teaching licenses for English 5-9 and 8-12 and Latin K-12 and am half-way through my Master's of Education program, hoping to specialize in helping students with reading difficulty. I plan to complete this degree through Morehead State University in the future. I recently completed my classes in the Childhood Development Associate's certificate program through Morehead held at Big Sandy in Prestonsburg. I anticipate my credential in fall 2013. I specialized in preschoolers ages 3-5.

I am very enthusiastic about tutoring students again. My own son has a genetic syndrome, so I know how difficult it is to raise and educate a special-needs child. I enjoy working with both high-achieving students who are wanting extra attention and stimulation that they may not be getting from the current curriculum as well as struggling students who need the extra attention to catch up to grade-level. I look forward to filling whatever needs your student may have.

I use both book lessons and my own made-up examples to teach grammar and reading concepts, and I try to use as much choice as possible since it seems to motivate students to complete assignments and relate the skills to their own lives. If they need specific help with classroom work, I demand that they bring their own attempts to the tutoring sessions so that we have something concrete to work with. I believe that hard work--but not "busy work"--will provide great results.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

While I was teaching English and ESL Resource (a type of study-hall for students whose English language was not their first, native language), I specifically taught my students how to study. Reading for pleasure and reading for different content areas often are skills that need to be discussed explicitly with freshmen students as well as ESL students. I would have them bring in their text books, and we would go through how to use a table of contents, a glossary, titles within chapters, bold terms, summaries, etc. We would also practice good reading skills such as making predictions, guessing words they didn't understand from context clues, and how to use pictures, charts, and graphs, to help them understand their reading. I also then taught them to take notes in various ways that might suit their needs and different subjects. Finally, we go over how to avoid test and presentation anxiety.
