I am a PhD candidate in the history department at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). In addition to being qualified to teach courses at the university level and having worked two years leading discussion sections at UCI, I have three years of experience in tutoring Advanced Placement (AP) history students.

In both the college-level courses and AP tutoring, I help students learn how to effectively read the assigned material, develop critical reasoning skills and express themselves clearly both orally and in writing. I am comfortable working with students who need help with English, reading, and writing, as well as advanced history.

Though my recent educational background focuses on history and history students, I am qualified to tutor several other subjects as well. Prior to deciding on history as a major, I took coursework on English literature and creative writing, so I can assist with English and writing.

This past summer, I was employed by my university to work as a mentor for students who will submit university applications in the fall. Graduate Student Mentors/Leads in this program assisted students in creating a well-written and well-rounded application, as well as advising them on work-life balance and how to research and compose an original research paper under the guidance of faculty.

As a graduate student, I have become a learner of languages and since gained experience working with people who do not speak English as their first language. Often the way we write and the way we speak can be completely different. I can help with English grammar both in oral and written communication, focusing on formality versus informality, making correct word choices (particularly verb tenses), and pronunciation.

I also worked full-time for several years in real estate finance and property management, with a focus on bookkeeping. I am proficient in several professional and everyday software programs, including Quickbooks and Microsoft Office.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

One of my subfields for the PhD is religious studies. I have taken coursework and passed comprehensive exams on this topic. My research deals with Christianity and Islam specifically, so I must study the Bible and Quran in addition to history. I worked as a university section instructor for a course in religious studies. The purpose of the course was to help students investigate their personal beliefs -- which included analyzing religious texts -- and learning about the faiths of those around them.

Microsoft Outlook

I worked as an Executive Assistant for three years and as a senior employee in the mortgage industry for two years. During those times I worked extensively with Office Suite, including Outlook. Many of the offices in which I worked used Outlook as their primary email software. As the Executive Assistant I not only managed my own emails but also my supervisor's. At times I advised my bosses on how to make the best use of the software, including email.

Speech

As a graduate student, I often have to present research through oral presentation, whether in the classroom or at conferences. As a teacher of undergraduates, I instruct students on how to express themselves clearly and properly through speech. I also have experience in helping students create well-structured content, both oral and written, as well as focusing on grammar and presentation.
