Spanish- I have had a love for the Spanish language since I was a young boy. My uncle was colonel in the U.S. army, and was stationed overseas for years. As a result my cousins spoke Spanish. This inspired me to catch up with their ability to converse using this new language. About that same time my Dad gave me a book that he had used to learn Spanish quickly when he investigated Nazis infiltrating the USA in World War II (how cool is that)? Before I knew it, I was able to speak rudimentary Spanish phrases. That's how I started and eventually I had three years of high school Spanish and four years of college Spanish. Junior and Senior level Spanish classes at KU allowed very little English to be spoken. I traveled quite a bit in Mexico in college, doing self study of the language.
Algebra- I developed an above average competence in algebra in a private prep school in Kansas City. Later I began tutoring my friends in college in remedial algebra. I helped teach my four children, who were all home schooled.
Drums- I started out on piano and quickly moved to drums. I began performing in public in dance bands at age 14. I have played all my life both live and in the studio (45 years). I read and write basic drum lines, fills, and rudiments, and excel at drum set and snare technique. I seek beginner to intermediate students.
Tennis- I have played tennis all my life and actively competed until two years ago. I have studied the game with some of the top club pros in the nation and I have won many club-level events. I was a 'ranked' doubles player in the Missouri Valley District for several years. At age 52 I won the Overland Park Men's 45 and older doubles trophy. I prefer beginners and intermediate players to coach.
My tutoring style is flexible as I work with a student to determine his or her objectives. Once I know what the student wants and needs, we'll develop a customized plan using all media and resources available. I have found that one size does not fit all.
