I have completed my Master's in Education with a content area in Spanish. My student teaching was at a large high school with a diverse student population. I have done long term subbing in Spanish classrooms where I was required to create lesson plans and adjust those lesson plans for students who were at several different levels of Spanish in the same classroom. I have mainly worked with students in middle school and high school, but am also comfortable working with younger and older students. Before I completed my Masters, I owned a home based childcare and taught Spanish to the children in my care as part of a preschool program.
While in my long term sub positions, I often tutored students who needed extra help understanding the material. I believe that if a student wants to learn, then there is a way to help them learn. Sometimes it means using more hands on activities, for example using more games and practice dialogues to learn the vocabulary. Sometimes it means using flashcards or having the student do a project that uses the information being learned, for example when learning vocabulary for food, having the student create a restaurant that serves those foods and then create a dialogue between a waiter and a customer to practice the vocabulary. It is necessary for the student to have opportunities to practice the vocabulary in a safe environment so that their mind begins to make connections and see patterns in the target language.
I have a passion for languages and have studied 5 different languages. I would like to share my enthusiasm for learning languages with students so that they can see that learning another language is more about the ability to communicate with another culture and see how that culture is both similiar and different from ours, than about memorizing vocabulary and repeating words on a test.
