I am a retired special education teacher with 30 years of elementary classroom experience. My favorite part of teaching was helping struggling students with reading and math. It was gratifying to watch them build success as they gained confidence in their abilities.
The most effective instruction is research based. I have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach of teaching reading. It is a systematic and explicit teaching of reading skills. Through multisensory techniques, a child will develop his/her own unique learning style.
I have a current Kansas teaching certificate and have more than 30 years of experience. During the summer of 2010, I completed the Kansas Reading First Academy. I attended the KU Learning Strategies during the summer of 2011. To become an effective reading tutor, I am completing my training and internship in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading remediation. It has been developed to help children with dyslexia, but the methods are effective for all struggling readers.
I use the Orton-Gillingham method of reading instruction. Lessons include the direct teaching of phonics (matching letters to sounds); phonological awareness activities (identifying and manipulating individual sounds); and structure of the English language(syllable patterns, prefixes suffixes, roots, and spelling rules. Lessons are multisensory, structured, and sequential. This method was developed for children with dyslexia, but it can be effective for all children with reading challenges.
