My name is Zachary. My interest in tutoring started when I was a middle school student myself, helping a few classmates study for tests or cram for the state-required evaluations. When I was in high school, I started tutoring students in Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus I for cash, and quickly found I could make good money tutoring a wide range of subjects. I obtained my undergraduate degree from Baker University in Psychology, while continuing to tutor in increasing subject areas like English, biology, chemistry and philosophy. My graduate degree is a Master's of Science in Experimental Psychology, which was a statistics-heavy degree path.
When I tutor, I like to first discover how students are most comfortable learning. Psychology has long held that multiple learning styles exist, and while debate continues to rage over which style is best I prefer to think of each style as having its own strengths and drawbacks. However, I have learned to teach to many different styles, and can teach contextually, rote, test-oriented or experience-based lessons. I am also comfortable with group tutoring, having led several classes of students in graduate school.
I also understand that, all the usual notes about teaching for the long-term aside, sometimes you just need someone to teach you how to take a college prep test. Some people just don't like taking ACTs and SATs, and there's nothing wrong with that. I can teach you how to stop fearing the bubble sheets, and how to pick out patterns and styles of questioning that help you find the right answer even when you're unsure of your own.
However, true learning often takes place when the student learns not merely facts and formulas, but the context in which those things occur. I am very skilled in teaching core subjects in a method that helps students to absorb and increase in knowledge without any tutor present at all. I consider my job well done if a student keeps reading the books long after the tutoring sessions expire.
Having spent the majority of the last six years studying psychology, and in particular psychopathology, teaching on ADD/ADHD is a specialty of mine. I can teach both the abnormal psychology of ADD/ADHD (it's diagnostic criterion, DSM-IV standards and so on), and the pharmacology behind treatment options, as well as prevailing theory as to both ADHD as a diagnosis and the studies behind its emergence.
I'm already an ASVAB tutor through WyzAnt, which means I've tutored and taught the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test as a matter of course (the AFOQT being similar enough in content that some tutoring agencies and students don't bother to differentiate prior to starting tutoring). I have formally tutored 2 cadets in the AFOQT, and both went on to qualify through their scores for OCS training.

In high school I was offered the chance to take an ASVAB along with most other students at my grade level. I scored in the 90th percentile or better in all subject areas for the AFQT, including a 99th percentile for Mathematics. I did not enlist due to medical issues and a desire to attend college immediately after graduation, but I believe my scores speak for themselves. In addition, I have taken and administered multiple Item Response Theory (IRT) based tests, which is the system used in the design of the ASVAB, so I believe I can effectively communicate my knowledge of the right way to study for these tests to other individuals.

I am trained in APA, MLA and Chicago styles and have familiarity with Turabian and other hybrid codes of composition and reference. As a thesis graduate of Emporia State, I have personally survived the experience of editing, proofing and publishing a multi-hundred page scientific paper. I also have wide-ranging experience instructing younger students in phonics, grammar and spoken English skills, including young ESL students.
As a Geometry tutor, I take a visual, practice-based approach to teaching formulas and applications. Algebra and Algebra II tutoring was how I got my start tutoring back in college, and remain my strongest subjects to date. I needed to have a mastery of Linear algebra (and tougher maths besides) in order to receive my Master's degree, and many of the students I tutored in Geometry and Pre-Algebra through WyzAnt became Linear Algebra students over time (not to mention the ones who needed LA review in preparation for ACT or SAT tutoring).
I have taken multiple courses in undergraduate college relating to world religious studies and the tenets and ethical philosophies of world religions. Further, I specifically took courses relating to the philosophies and ethics of the Christian faith, and analysis of the contents of the Bible. I have worked to lead Vacation Bible Schools through my church, and feel that I am qualified to instruct as to the specific contents and tenets of different sects of Christianity as well as the general ethical principles of world religions.
After 4 years of SAT tutoring, I take a heuristic approach to study that revolves around student practice and category preparation. Students I tutor often remark how easily they fall into the rhythm of the SAT test after my tutoring, and how quickly they can triage problems and solve the ones that will definitely earn them points.
Over 9 years now I've tutored a total of about 50 individuals, in groups and one-on-one, in various subjects ranging from simple mathematics to computer programming and psychology, and all of whom required different study techniques to be employed, including flash cards, rote memorization, experiential learning, visual cueing, and mnemonics. Furthermore, I am currently working with a young man whose tutoring requires that I stick to certain Kansas State-approved study methodologies, so I have official experience using those methods as well.
I have detailed experience working tutoring using Kansas State requirements for various grade levels of skills and the methods used to teach them to both individual students and large groups, including milestone markers and official state criterion as of 2009-2010 school year revisions. I have incorporated these with my own techniques for teaching study skills outside the classroom as well as effective methods for learning in-class.
