I have a current Kansas Teaching License and I am certified for grades K-6. My specialty is reading and phonics, as I was a first and second grade teacher for two years. I have experience in other grades as well: I student taught in 6th grade and 3rd grade, and I am currently a paraprofessional in fourth grade. I have experience working with children who have special needs, and I love creating lessons to fit the student's unique learning style. I'm looking for a way to continue working with students this summer when school is out of session. I have A LOT of my own material and resources including phonics material, math manipulatives, and books on all reading levels. My passion is teaching, and I love opportunities to work one-on-one with children.
Throughout my student teaching, classroom teaching and work as a paraprofessional, I have worked with many students with ADD and ADHD. I have developed strategies to help them stay focused and be successful.
One of the students I currently work with has Aspergers Syndrome. I am learning how to help this student reach his potential. Strategies include encouraging him when he is following the guidelines and "doing his job" in the classroom, redirecting him when he is distracted by "obsessions," and reteaching difficult concepts by breaking them down into smaller, more manageable steps.
One of the students I work with daily has autism. He was the priority on my case load for the first half of the school year (I spent approximately five hours a day working one-on-one with him). Now I work with him during our reading block. I have developed strategies for his unique learning style and special needs.
When I was a first and second grade classroom teacher, one of my second graders had dyslexia. I tutored him after school once a week to practice phonics and reading. His scores greatly improved from this extra support, and I learned how to meet his learning needs better in the classroom.
I have been a student teacher in 3rd grade and 6th grade. I spent two years teaching a combined first and second grade class. This taught me how to multi-task, always keeping each group learning and focused, even when their content was different. Now I am a paraprofessional in 4th grade. As an emergency substitute, I have now had experience in EVERY grade level in my school building (K-5th).
As a current paraprofessional, I have had experience working with students who have different special needs. I have learned about strategies and tools to use with these students to help them be successful in the regular classroom.
As a student teacher in third grade and a paraprofessional in fourth grade, I have assisted and taught students specific study skills when preparing for their state tests. As a student myself, I researched and implemented study skills, emphasizing organization, and finding ways to make learning meaningful and memorable.
