I love education, knowledge, and being a student and somewhat a teacher (the unofficial kind of course). I also enjoy video-games, writing/reading poetry and novels, bike riding, taking long walks, and just going out for fun. I was born and raised mostly in the D.C. area but have lived in other locations over the years like North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kansas. I currently reside in Hutchinson, KS and I work during the school year as a grade school paraprofessional. I also hope to be able to teach a college course or two on the Bible as well as teach and share poetry with local high school students.
I am 31 years old with 3 years of tutoring experience; I did those years at my old church's volunteer tutoring program,Tutor Connection, from October-May of 1998-2001 (have certificate on request) in basic math and Algebra. I also worked as a paraprofessional for DCPS from February 2004 to October 2004. I worked as a contractor for Delta-T serving as a one-to-one aide in DC public schools. I was a student at Claflin University in 2001-2002 and at Washington Bible College in 2002-2003 and in 2007-2008. I plan on completing my education online in the near future while I continue to consider a graduate school for my Masters of Divinity for the Christian pastorate. I also graduated high school with honors: National's Honors Society, Who's Who, Certificate of Merit, and a GPA of 3.8; my college GPA is 3.0.
Despite my background, I always consider myself a student and I am always learning. How I usually tutor my students (in the past) was to be one-to-one, warm and inviting, and letting the student feel comfortable with the environment. I use a logical, step-by-step, cumulative process approach in tutoring. I assess by asking questions concerning the work and ask the student to explain what they know and what they are seeking. I, then, take the students' knowledge and expand on it by furthering their knowledge on the subject. I also let the student "teach" me to help them hear and explain what they know for future reference. I also rely on the student to bring his/her work to the session and anything that is needed so that work given is the same level or caliber of what the student's teacher has assigned (so I don't do anything differently and confuse you). I also honor the student for making progress and overcoming academic difficulties in terms of the work; I know it's not easy sometimes and we all need some type of recognition.
