My philosophy about tutoring a math subject is to always try to stress practical applications or illustrations for the problems at hand. This seemed to be missing a lot of the time when I was in school, not just in math but in most every subject. One good method I have used is to show how deeply ingrained math is involved in sports - everything from figuring batting averages and earned run averages to calculating which players might be best at which positions, using their past performance records.
My personal background has been in the engineering field, mostly in the design of electrical control panels. Mathematics has always been a huge part of my job.
