Algebra 1

While attending JCCC I took Technical Mathematics 1 and Tech Math 2 courses earning BS in both. These courses covered everything from basic math through to a pre-calculus level.

The book used in these courses is written just how I teach providing clear definitions followed by examples. It is also written in a multidisciplinary perspective providing examples from many different areas of study. I have kept this book for reference.

Calculus

I took Calculus 1 and 2 at KU passing with B and C respectively.

I find most peoples problems with calculus come not from the calculus itself but from difficulty with logarithmic, exponential, and trig functions. So before I start tutoring anyone in calculus I start with those to be sure you're good with them.

####
Chemistry

I took general chemistry 1 and 2 at KU getting Cs in both.

I recall taking general chem and not quite getting it. It didn't start to make complete sense until I started tutoring in organic. It was then that I realized that chemistry is like dating. Opposites attract and form more stable relationships, it's the subtlety that will kill you.

Armed with this I found chemistry easy to tutor at most levels.

Microsoft Excel

When I first started at JCCC, I took a class in Microsoft Office programs including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access, earning an A in the course.

This was back in the days of office 97. However, I have continued to update my skills with each new version of office and have learning many tricks to work between the programs.

I find excel in particular to be nearly as powerful as a programing language. With a good background in math and logic you can get it to do almost...

General Computer

I have been working with computers since I was a kid. I'm talking about the days of command prompt DOS operating systems. I have also worked with windows since windows 3.1.

In my college career (namely my time at JCCC) I learned about computer programing, hardware and software installation and troubleshooting.

My experience in research and college also exposed me to many different computer programs and given me a large pool of tricks to accomplish many different things.

My best experience with word was while I was employed as a proofreader and office assistant. I would be stunned if I didn't use every aspect of the...

Elementary Math

While at UND I took a student job as a tutor for middle schoolers. It was an after hours program where students could come and get help in any subject they needed. During this time I noticed that unlike adults children need a good reason to learn something.

Math in particular fails to show how the next step makes things easier. For example: multiplication is just repeated addition 2*5 = 2+2+2+2+2, but if that isn't pointed out, the kids see times tables as nothing more than a massive...

Elementary Science

During my time in North Dakota, I had a student job at a middle school. I was a tutor for an after school program where kids from many different grades could come to get help with any subject they needed. Math, science, reading, history, etc. I also brought science demos for them to see and try out.

Organic Chemistry

I took Organic one at the University of Kansas in 2005 and passed with a B. I took Organic two at the Univerisity of Kansas in 2005 and passed with an A (finished something like 13 out of 500 students).

I then spent the next 4 years running discussions outside of class and tutoring 1 on 1 and in small groups.

I also have notes I created notes for these classes that summarize all the essential topics covered over the two courses.
