Hello!
Thank you for visiting!
I have an Indiana teaching license in Social Studies. I am licensed to teach Government, History (World and U.S.), Sociology, and Psychology to students in 5th-12th grade. I have experience teaching Social Studies, remedial English, elementary math, and Study Skills classes to middle school students. I have also served as a teaching assistant for college-level Psychology classes at Ball State University. I love teaching!
I earned my Bachelors degree from Ball State University. My major was Sociology with minors in Ancient Studies and Political Science. After working as a teen counselor, I went back to Ball State and earned my Masters degree in Secondary Education while simultaneously completing Social Studies teaching license requirements. Since then, I became the first student in Ball State history to complete their new Middle Level Education graduate certificate program!
I have 19 years' experience working with children and youth ages 8-18! This includes 8 years as a private drum instructor, 5 years as a teen counselor at the Madison County Youth Center, plus my time as a classroom teacher.
I came to love Social Studies during my enlistment in the Navy. See my profile page for pictures of the aircraft I worked on and the aircraft carrier I served on -- the U.S.S. America. I visited places like Athens, Greece; London, England; the Valley of the Queens in Egypt; and Naples, Italy, to name a few. I saw that there were so many interesting places in the world with thousands of years of history! I wanted to learn about them all and teach what I learned to young people.
Here are 5 things my former students and their parents have said about me and my teaching style:
1. "My child used to hate Social Studies! They love your class. They're learning so much!"
2. "Mr. S. makes it fun because he teaches you things that aren't in the textbook."
3. "Mr. S.'s tests are HARD - but he doesn't try tricking you. He helps you learn . . . so you know it."
4. "So you're Mr. S! My child is always talking about you and your class. They love the way you teach."
5. "Ask Mr. S. - he helps me in my other classes all the time."
Those are quotes from parents and students at both of the schools where I've taught. I make learning easy and fun by using activities students can relate to. I use very few worksheets and substitute them with technology-based activities wherever possible. I also show students how what we're learning relates to their other classes -- usually by using Mind Maps.
My philosophy of education can be summed up in one sentence, "Provide the best education possible to every student every day." I'm always willing to do whatever it takes to help my students learn! For example, as a teacher I had my students create Medieval castles! You can see one of them here on my profile.
I would love to tutor you or your child! I have flexible availability and travel limits. I can meet after regular school hours or during the day with home-school students. I can also serve as a Learning Coach or Co-Learning Coach for virtual students at Hoosier Academies or Indiana Connections Academy. I'm willing to negotiate a lower rate for larger blocks of time if you or your student needs 5 or more hours of tutoring per week or needs a Learning Coach.
Groups of students are also eligible for a discount! If two or three students are working on the same project, I will meet with all of you to help you do a great job!
I offer a $5 discount per lesson if you schedule two or more at a time! Families with more than one student in need of tutoring can also get a discount! Each student will still get their own time slot. Ask me about these discounts when you contact me.
If you have questions about my tutoring subjects, teaching background, or anything you see on my profile - please E-mail me and I'll get back to you with an answer.
Please let me know about cancellations at least 8 hours in advance. Students will be charged half of the regular -- or negotiated -- fee for lessons cancelled 4 - 8 hours before scheduled tutoring sessions. Students will be charged full fees for sessions cancelled with less than a 4 hour notice.
The state of Indiana completed a full background check for me prior to issuing my teaching license. You can find my teaching license information online using the Indiana Department of Education teacher's license search page. Type "educator lookup".
Have a Great Day!
