Hi, my name is Jennifer and I received my B.S. in Conservation Biology from SUNY Cortland, graduating as a member of the TriBeta National Biology Honor Society. I recently graduated from Ball State University (BSU) with a M.S. in Biology. I have demonstrated proficiency in subject matter (maintained a 4.0 GPA) and was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student in the Field Sciences by the Biology Department upon graduation. Additionally, BSU has an annual student symposium which displays the work of over 100 projects and in both years at BSU, I received the Sigma Xi (national science organization) Outstanding Graduate Student Presentation award. While at BSU, I was a laboratory instructor for biology classes and the teaching assistant for Ornithology. I also am presently a reading tutor for elementary students.
However, my own experience does not necessarily demonstrate my ability to portray information in a suitable manner to others. I would like to briefly outline some of the methods that I have used to reach this very goal. For one thing, I realize that a lot of material may be confusing in concept, especially when learning it for the first time. For this reason, I like to use analogies in my teaching and also demonstrate material from more than one angle. For example, in my biology lab I used a power-drill and a 10 foot piece of string held by a student across the room to demonstrate the coiling and condensing abilities of a strand of DNA into the more recognizable chromosomes that are seen in karyotypes.
Additionally, to increase efficiency and maintain proper workflow I believe it is of the utmost importance to organize materials properly. With that being said, I greatly appreciate tutoring work sent via email prior to the tutoring session to enable me to properly execute this task. This not only helps me in finding the best way to portray information, but also ensures that YOU receive the optimal learning experience from each session (which is what this is really about, right?).
I hope to share my passion and love for learning with you. Everybody deserves to be the very best they can be!
