As a former teacher, the first thing I want to learn from the student is his or her strongest learning style. There are three types of leaning styles and to be successful with a student, a tutor must quickly learn their strongest style. The learning styles are visual, auditory and kinesthetic. The visual learner takes numerous notes and often closes their eyes to visualize or remember something. They like to see what they are learning, and they benefit from illustrations and presentations that use color. They find passive surroundings to be ideal, especially without auditory and kinesthetic distractions.

The auditory learner learns best by reading aloud. They like to sit where they can hear and listen. And they remember by verbalizing lessons to themselves.

The kinesthetic learner learns best by touch and doing. They need to be active and take frequent breaks. Often, they speak with their hands and with gestures. They can remember what was done but have difficulty recalling what was said or seen. They will often sit near a door or someplace where they can easily get up and move around. Even the movement of eating or drinking water while they study can help them learn.

Once I determine what type of learning the student uses primarily, then we can proceed in a manner conducive to his or her learning style.

I am a Native English Speaker with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a graduate degree in Law. Work experience has made me proficient in all elementary work with special emphasis on English Composition. I have done a lot of writing and research. I have experience with math, and other elementary subjects. I also have proficiency in subjects, such as political science, business law, and Legal writing. I have years of computer experience and am proficient in various software, but most useful here would be Word 7.

I also expect the children to be accountable. If I give them an assignment I expect them to use their learning style techniques to complete in the assignment in a timely way. I enjoy being in the position to provide children the special environment they need to success.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a degree in Elementary Education and taught classes for several years prior to having children. Later I substituted in those grades for teachers who had to be absent. I love working with children particularly on a one on one basis.

English

In addition to teaching English in elementary school, I also wrote to an online database and taught other colleagues to use proper grammar, spelling, and English in general. Writing in English is an area of expertise. I have also been published. I have done writing and editing for major corporations and for clients.

General Computer

I have used computers for 30 years and feel very confident teaching General Computers to any student. I enjoy teaching and watching the student get excited as the computer begins to come alive for them.

Reading

I have excellent reading comprehension. With a BA in Elementary Education I taught Elementary Education when I was younger. In more recent years I worked with colleagues in reading for comprehension. I like to determine a child's learning style and then work with them in the best way for their style of learning. I like to use humor whenever possible.
