I have loved learning all of my life, and that has transformed into a love of teaching. After four years in high school of AP courses and accelerated classes and another four years in college, I know how difficult studying and succeeding can be. After teaching a semester of English in a Japanese middle school and being an instructional assistant for special education classes in the States, I have faith in my ability to understand students and their needs.

I am most comfortable teaching Japanese, English, and art classes, though I have experience teaching almost any subject. My teaching style is flexible to the needs of the student; a student with five hours of homework doesn't need more from me, and a student trying to get ahead in the summer has free time to put towards more intensive learning.

I grew up with several family members with special needs, from an ADHD/OCD younger brother to a bipolar older brother and a severely autistic cousin. Currently, I work with students with a variety of needs, including autism, Tourette's, and several learning disabilities. I feel I have the patience and experience to truly help children with more pressing tutoring needs.

I am happy to travel to a home or a more neutral location like a library or coffee shop, depending on the needs of the student/guardian. Because of this, I do have a 24 hour cancellation notice policy. I am, however, fairly flexible, and am willing to provide makeup sessions as desired.

I look forward to helping you succeed in your studies and take life by the horns!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been an instructional assistant in a foundational class and an intensive intervention class for two years. I work extensively with children who have ADD and ADHD. I was also raised in a household with a severely ADHD child, and helped him with his schoolwork throughout his school career.

Aspergers

I have worked for the past two years in a foundational class for special needs children and an intensive intervention room for problem behavior children. Many of my students have had autism or Asperger's. I am familiar with the color system for indicating when a child is overstimulated or approaching a meltdown.

Drawing

I provide drawing lessons for several children once a week. To supplement my income as an instructional assistant, I do art commissions for various clients. I am proficient in graphite art, digital art, and watercolor.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently am an instructional assistant with grades 5-8 children. Before that, I worked as a substitute teacher in elementary and middle schools. During high school, I often helped my mother at the church preschool, and I enjoy working with my four year old niece.

Special Needs

I currently work with behavioral and developmentally disabled children as an instructional assistant. My students have been diagnosed with a wide array of special needs and disorders, including ADHD, oppositional/defiant disorder, autism, PTSD, and OCD. I am familiar with reading IEPs and have been trained by my school district in how to treat and teach special needs children effectively.
