I am a senior at Valparaiso University studying to earn my degree in Mechanical Engineering as well as a minor in Electrical Engineering. I decided to become an engineer as I love figuring out how the world around me works. I have many questions about why nature and technology behave the way they do and I thoroughly enjoy applying my knowledge to answer my questions.
My passion for answering questions and learning had naturally lead me to become a Valparaiso University College of Engineering Hesse Scholar. As a Hesse Scholar, I not only have the opportunity to answer my own questions, but those of my peers. An aspect of being a Hesse Scholar is providing tutoring services for the College of Engineering. This way I can aid my colleagues in their quest for understanding. I enjoy my work as a Hesse Tutor and students have sought me out for aid even while I am 'off the clock.' As my abilities as a tutor grow I frequently find myself walking into a computer lab to study, but end up aiding groups of students in solving the challenging homework problems they receive.
As a tutor, I try not to simply 'do the homework for you.' I believe that the best way for a student to learn is to determine the questions to ask and the methods to use when solving problems. My goal is to make those I tutor not need me anymore. I want them to be able to understand the problems at a higher level so that when faced with the more difficult, different types of questions on the exam, they are prepared for the challenge.
As a Hesse Scholar, I hold myself to a high standard. I often times ask for feedback so that I can aid individuals in a way that meets their needs. Everyone is different. Also, I never bill for a lesson if a student or parent is not completely satisfied with my tutoring.
Because I am a college student, I have a flexible schedule. There are several quiet places on campus to study and they are open to everyone. I am also able to travel to another location if it is better suited for the student.
Please let me know if you need help in your studies. I would love to help you out.
Currently, I am a senior studying to become a mechanical engineer at Valparaiso University. As such, I have successively learned and worked with high levels of math for almost four years. Comprehension of differential equations and calculus requires strong mathematical fundamentals which ACT Math is a part of.
During the past two years, I have taught several high school students algebra 1. Each of them came back and told me they saw marked improvements in their algebra test and class scores.
In my engineering classes, algebra is the backbone of many of my calculations. I have worked with it extensively and have become proficient at it. I have also taught high school, as well as college students, algebra when they needed help.
As a senior Hess Scholar tutor, I have taught Freshman and others Calculus throughout my years at Valparaiso. As such, I have a lot of experience teaching others calculus.
I am studying to become a Mechanical Engineer at Valparaiso University. However, I am also earning a minor in electrical engineering. I am graduating in May 2014 and have the honor of being a tutor for the College and regularly help underclassmen with linear circuits, digital logic, and circuit theory. I effectively aid my peers in their work and have earned a cumulative 3.7/4.0 GPA
In engineering, geometry is used extensively. It is used to find stress states as well as design products. I have been using geometry in practical ways in my internships and co-ops and can apply real world examples to the problems.

Physics is a large part of engineering. As a tutor, I help the freshman each year with their physics problems. I have weekly help sessions and make sure each of them know how the problems work and know what to look for. They have all told me that I have helped them out and made physics easy to understand.
I have been using algebra all of my college life. It is used in all of my classes and is a vital skill to an engineer. My ability to use algebra well stems from my strong prealgebra skills. I have also taught several high school students prealgebra to great success.
In engineering, you take several classes which essentially apply trigonometry. As such, I can provided students with 'useful' examples. I have aided others in these classes and have done well in them myself.
Great Tutor / Very Personable — Tom worked very well with my 9th grader to assist with his Algebra homework. They reviewed materials for his upcoming final exam. My husband and I were very impressed, and my son stated that Tom was very helpful. We look forward to working with Tom in the future. ...
