Having countless years of experience of tutoring elementary through college levels, I have a knack for figuring out exactly how to convey what a student is not getting when it comes to a particular sticking point. I put what is highly technical into easy-to-understand terms. I truly enjoy helping students learn.
My vast experience allows me to quickly assess the individual student's needs and the relevant details of their unique situation, inasmuch as I have a knack for asking all the right questions to get at the heart of the matter. With the vast majority of students I tutor, I ask the student and parents questions they have never been asked and make points that have never been made to them before. I have a unique gift for solving problems that goes far beyond the ability to explain homework. I have taught students how to read who had never read before. I have explained fractions to college students who had never understood how to add or multiply fractions despite repeated attempts from other specialists. I have tutored students of all ages and abilities, from those who have learning disabilities to those who are highly gifted. I'm all about focusing on what is best for the student and helping the student complete his or her homework or prepare for upcoming exams. I've also helped countless students at all levels research and write papers and/or prepare for standardized tests.
It is highly rewarding to impart knowledge of even the most basic concept when I know that a student is breaking through a barrier. My vast experience allows me to quickly identify in very specific terms a student's strengths as well as problem areas. The individual attention that I give the student in tutoring allows me to pick up on the particular needs of the student in very detailed ways. For example, each student benefits from my specific points on how to improve their performance on tests, or finding specific memory tricks.
I have also tutored a number of college students in a variety of subjects, including Philosophy. Many of the concepts are complex and must be analyzed bit by bit. Philosophy often requires logic, but it can also help to be very imaginative. For example, it may take a lot of creative thinking to refute a given theory. I find creative ways of helping each and every student understand and remember particularly difficult concepts in a variety of subjects. There are countless examples in history of the fruits of imaginative thinking and new ideas, and I see every student as having great potential.
I'm consistent at showing dignity and respect to all individuals. I've recently obtained an Indiana teacher's license, but I have long realized that I have a very definite gift for teaching. I earned my undergraduate degree at the University of Indianapolis (UIndy). Majors: Psychology and History; Phi Alpha Theta - Honor Society for History; Minors in Business Administration and Philosophy. In college, I had two semesters of Biology, two of Chemistry, two of Calculus, two of calculus-based Physics, all taken as electives. I've done coursework in legal research. I also have a current Health Facility Administrator's license on file with the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, which shows my business and leadership acumen as well as expertise in the health care field. This also means that I have the equivalent of three bachelor's degrees. I have an advanced certification in Westlaw for legal research, and I am president and founder of a consulting company.
I encourage parents to sit in on tutoring sessions if they like. I am always more than willing to spend time speaking with parents about educational, learning, and related issues. Parents are by far the most important advocates for a student. My role as a tutor includes encouraging students and parents in the continuous process of education and learning. The only way that I know how to help someone is with complete honesty and efficiency. If I can see a way to help a student break through a barrier sooner rather than later, I will help them to accomplish that as soon as possible.
Having decades of experience, I've helped students break through barriers so quickly that everyone was surprised. I can sometimes teach a student how to help themselves or how to think about or approach a subject in a way they had never heard before and in a way that they didn't need my services for very long at all. I have also helped students for the long term; everyone has unique needs and learning issues. Being personable but discreet and easy to talk to about your unique needs and goals, I am confident in my ability to communicate and tutor effectively and efficiently and make a significant difference for you.
As far as my hourly rate, I’m willing to consider the number of hours of tutoring, as well as my driving distance. I'm very happily married with a family of my own and therefore understand family-oriented situations and scheduling needs. I hope I get the chance to talk with you.
