Bible Studies

Biblical studies along with historical studies, doctrinal studies and practical studies comprise what is referred to as theological studies. Biblical studies happen within the confines of the Bible itself. A study of the Bible could consist of the study of one passage, one book, the Old or New Testament, or the entire Bible.
I have taught Biblical studies to Sunday school classes, youth groups, from the pulpit as a pastor and in one on one discipleship sessions for sixteen years. I also earned a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. All of the classes for that program required direct interaction with the Bible as well as writing expository papers on portions of it.
In a tutoring environment not only will the Biblical text be studied but also the historical/cultural backgrounds. This is done to add depth of understanding due to the vast cultural differences between us and the people of the Bible. Doctrinal studies and practical studies will be touched on lightly to lend understanding to why Christians hold to certain doctrines and why churches and pastors function as they do. I invite you to join me in studying the Bible. It is not only the best-selling book of all time but it is also the rule of faith and sacred Scripture to some 2.2 billion Christians. This makes Christianity as a whole the world's largest religion and subsequently the Bible has had a worldwide impact and influence.

College Counseling

College counseling is an important task and one that too few college students and prospective college students take advantage of. It can sometimes be quite difficult to step back and evaluate your interests, strengths and potential. This is where a college counselor can really make a difference being not just a jumping off point but also a great motivator for the student's academic endeavors. I have acted as a career counselor for young people through the Harlan Christian Youth Center and through a few churches. Together we can explore your interests, talents, strengths and potential. There is a course of study out there that will fit you like a glove and that will provide a career that you will love. Take the first step and schedule a tutoring session for college counseling.

Philosophy

Is there a God? Why am I here? What is the meaning of life? Why is there suffering in the world? These are some of the "Big Questions" of life. A study of philosophy answers or seeks to answer these questions. Philosophy can provide a structure in which one can live their life and be consistent. It can also provide a framework to look for and understand the big picture in one's job, school or even in personal relationships. Also you can learn who Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Kant and many others are as well as what they thought and how it has shaped our world. Socrates said "The unexamined life is not worth living." I invite you to examine your life philosophically through tutoring.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is a skill like any other that requires development. For most people public speaking is their greatest fear. This fear can be relieved through practice and through proper preparation before the speaking engagement. As with all skills there are techniques that need to be learned. These techniques will be introduced a little at a time in order to build confidence in the speaker as well as give him or her small accomplishments along the way for encouragement.

My experience in public speaking is broad. I have given intelligence briefings in the U.S. Army, chaired business meetings, delivered sermons from the pulpit, taught youth and adult Sunday school classes, and hosted conferences and fundraisers. I still get anxious before speaking publicly but through the proper techniques and preparation that fear is no longer paralyzing. In fact it is motivating and when that fear is properly channeled invigorating.

Reading

Would you like to read and understand what you are reading? Would you like to read confidently? Reading is fundamental to learning. Too many students read just to get through a book or article instead of reading for understanding. You can learn to make reading not just understandable but enjoyable too. When you can read and understand what you are reading it gives you confidence. Even reading aloud in class becomes a breeze when you have confidence in your reading ability and your ability to understand what the text is saying.

Religion

The study of religion is the study of how man interacts with, understands and worships God. Religion acts as a framework to hang the doctrines of one's faith on. My own perspective comes from a Protestant non-denominational outlook. From this I teach students, who are not Christians, about the faith to clear up any misunderstandings they may have. For those who are Christians they can learn why certain beliefs are held and why the church functions as it does.

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from Liberty University where I majored in Religion and Business. I also earned a Dimensions of the Faith Certificate from the Ockenga Institute of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. I have taught religious education courses for sixteen years as well as served as a pastor, and a director of the Harlan Christian Youth Center.
My passion and desire is for you to come to understand the Christian religion and its many facets Also I would like to introduce you to philosophy of religion so that you can understand where people of other religions and belief systems are coming from. Better understanding breeds greater respect for one another in spite of our differences.

Spelling

Spelling is an integral part of writing. Nothing takes away from the credibility of a writer more than misspelled words in a book or article. Misspelled words are turning up in more and more media outlets. In fact, reading through internet news articles from mainstream news outlets I encounter one spelling error almost everyday! You can protect your credibility and impress your teacher by being tutored.

Study Skills

Effective study skills are essential at every level of education as well as in many career fields. Every person learns in a different manner so different techniques work for different people. The journey to find what works for you can be fun.

First we will explore your interests and hobbies. People generally can retain a lot of information about things they like to do. Also they can make connections about aspects of their interests with other topics and make detailed analyses of their interests. A study of your interests can prove to be a treasure trove in discovering how you learn, retain information and analyze data. This is because when you have an interest you unconsciously use the most efficient means possible to learn. After we discover how you learn and think we will match various study methods to your learning style. Sometimes this takes some trial and error but it is worth it.

Together we can discover how you learn best and use it to improve your study skills. This will help you for your entire life whether it be in formal education or your career.

Vocabulary

A broad vocabulary is an integral part of writing and understanding what you read. The use of proper vocabulary can give deeper meaning to what you write as well as helping you to understand what you read with more depth. As you learn new words you will eventually start picking up on connections. These connections come from "root" words that have their origin in Latin and Greek. When you start seeing these connections you can even tackle words that you have never heard before. All by knowing what the root words mean. You can impress your teacher and friends with your new found vocabulary by being tutored.

Writing

Writing is an integral part of communication. A poorly written article, paper or book can not only hurt the credibility of the author but can also mislead readers. The purpose of writing is to relay information. The art of writing is to relay information in a concise, factual and enjoyable way. For instance, we may read two textbooks on the same subject. The first textbook is dull and boring yet the second one is informative, lively and even fun to read. Why? The first one is most likely just an accounting of information while the second textbook is well written and a work of art. Through tutoring, you can learn to write so that your work will be both informative and enjoyable to read.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
