My name is Shalane and I currently teach 9th Grade English/Language Arts at Hammond Academy of Science and Technology. This is my 2nd year of having my own classroom, but it is my fifth year involved with education. I previously worked as a Title I Reading Aide for Merrillville Community School, closely working with individual students who were struggling with reading comprehension skills. During the 2010-2011 school year, I worked as a 10th Grade Reading and Remedial English Teacher, using a specialized program called "READ 180" that helps improve reading comprehension skills by at least two grade levels within one school year.
I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Indiana University Northwest in 2007. After substituting teaching for a little while, I felt the urge to share my passion for teaching with students on a permanent basis, so I decided to earn my teaching certification for English/Language Arts at Indiana University Northwest in 2010. I am currently state certified to teach English/Language Arts in grades 5-12. Along with focusing on reading skill deficits, one other area I enjoy specializing in is improving written skills. I love to write and I spend a great deal of my personal time writing. I have written a novel I hope to have published soon, and I love to share my passion for writing with my students as much as possible. I believe that I have a tremendous amount of knowledge to offer to students as a tutor and I am looking forward to any possible experiences working as a part-time tutor.
