I have been a classroom teacher for 6 years teaching competitive, Advanced Placement, and college-prep classes. I am a licensed Social Studies teacher and have taught Junior High history, high school World History, Government, Economics, AP Macroeconomics, US History, and Latin I and II.

In individual work with students, my strong points are building writing and study skills across curricular classes, test preparation, SAT/ACT prep, and challenging students to compete and excel. My approach is one of a coach - it is a WE approach, and I like to have a light, older-brother type relationship with my individual students. We will be very much goal oriented, and I will commit my resources and network to helping my kids get to where they want to go.

Writing

Focus is on developing the structure, research, and analysis, for general paper writing. Also build skills to do well on College Boards and AP exams.

Phonics

As a communication major during my undergraduate years, I have a strong background in linguistics and phonetics in language and reading acquisition. In my six years as a classroom teacher, I have also had to help teach many students (in their high school years) to read and am astounded at their inability to identify sounds and understand their own language. By teaching them using a phonics approach and sounding out words, many students have gained over 1.5 years in their reading levels.

Study Skills

Building study habits and skills should be the number one focus of students in high school and a central focus of every high school teacher.
