Experienced Teacher- Algebra, Geometry, Pre Algebra, Special Education

Hello!

I am a highly qualified math teacher. I have been teaching for 21 years in the area of Special Education. Although I have taught many different subjects over my career, I have a strength in teaching math. I currently teach Algebra 1 and Geometry at a local high school where I have been teaching for the past 17 years.

Over my teaching career, I have had the chance of working with many students one-on-one in a homebound situation and within resource classes. This provides me with the best chance to help a student, because I can teach to a student's strengths and weaknesses and work at their pace.

I have also taught in many co-teaching situations, which has allowed me to see other teachers' styles and methods. This provides me with many different ways to teach a concept. I am not a teacher who believes that you must do it one way or else. Except in certain situations, I feel it is okay to solve a problem any way, as long as the student truly understands how they get the answer.

I feel that as a Special Educator, I bring the ability to work with students of all levels. Whether you are a student struggling with math in general, or just stuck on a certain area, I have experience breaking things down into steps. This will allow most students to be able to comprehend concepts at their own pace. I will try to work with each student at their level, so that I can truly explain each concept in a way they understand. A big reason I want to tutor is that I will have a chance to help a student who may be struggling in math, who may even dislike math, and help guide them to where they are no longer struggling. My tutoring style depends on the student. I know that everyone person learns in a different way, so you cannot work with everyone using the same methods.

With my experiences in education, both within the classroom and in a one to one situation, I feel that I have a lot to offer students of all levels and abilities. I am looking forward to sharing my expertise with students who need a little push in the right direction.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 at a local high school for about 12 years. I know the curriculum and I am able to teach concepts in more than one way. I have had success teaching students of all different ability levels.

Geometry

I have taught Geometry at a local high school for about 10 years. I am able to teach most concepts in more than one way. Geometry is a subject many students struggle with because they try looking at it like any other math class. You need to look at geometry differently.

Prealgebra

I taught Pre-Algebra for several years, before my high school stopped teaching it. I have taught algebra for the last 12 years. I have several ways that I can teach most concepts.

Elementary Math

I have taught high school math for a long time. I work with Special Education students, so I have worked a lot on basic math skills. I understand the importance of knowing basic math skills in progressing in math. If a student struggles early on, they will struggle in higher level math.

Special Needs

I have worked in Special Education as a teacher for 21 years. I have a Bachelor of Science in Special Education and am licensed in grades K through 12. I have worked with students who have many different special needs, including Specific Learning Disabilites, ADD/ADHD, Autism, Aspergers. I attended Purdue University, West Lafayette for my Bachelor's and have taken many Continuing Ed courses through Purdue University Calumet and Indiana Wesleyan.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked for 21 years in the area of Special Education as a certified teacher. In this time, I have worked with many different students with ADD or ADHD, both within a classroom and one to one. I have experience on how to work with students who struggle with staying focused. I also understand that these students need to move around and are usually hands on learners.

Aspergers

Working as a High School Special Education teacher for the last 21 years, I have been given the chance to work with several students who have been diagnosed with Aspergers. I am familiar with the difficulties many students have both socially and academically. I have patience and a willingness to help these students overcome their difficulties so they can be successful within school setting.

Autism

In my 21 years of teaching Special Education, I have worked closely with students on the Autism Spectrum. I know that no two students on the Spectrum are alike and that they have to be instructed according to their unique needs and abilities. I have worked with these students in my classroom and as a Teacher of Record, so I have worked with them on many different levels.
