My goal as a tutor is to spark curiosity and break learning targets down into accessible, progressive steps towards mastery. I taught middle school Reading and Language Arts for three years, so I use proven strategies for helping students master reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, language and speaking skills. I am a fluent Spanish speaker and certified ESL instructor, so I love also helping people become proficient in a non-native language!
To maximize learning time, I connect students with relevant materials tailored to their interests. (For example, a student athlete might find reading texts about other athletes to be quite engaging.) As a teacher of middle school students, I am connected to the world of Young Adult literature and many other types of reading. I assign meaningful homework at the end of each lesson. I maintain student data to track progress and assess learning, and I know feedback is important, so I provide periodic assessments and written progress reports.
I try to remain flexible with my time to accommodate students' needs. While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I do offer make up classes.
I know the learning environment is important to making every minute learning count. I work with students in the local library or wherever a student has a quiet, comfortable space.
I look forward to connecting with you about your learning goals and how I can help you to meet them! I am happy to provide a free consultation meeting.
I am passionate about language and literature, which I used to help develop Reading skills in my middle students. Reading has always been my strongest suit. I scored an 800 on the Reading portion of the SAT when I was in high school.

I am a certified ESL teacher. I taught middle school Reading/Language Arts for three years, and many students in my classes were ESL learners. I am currently volunteering in adult ESL classes at community centers around Chicago. I speak Spanish as well, which allows me to make connections and draw language parallels and contrasts with the Spanish language.
I am passionate about language and literature, which I used to help develop Reading skills in my middle students. Reading has always been my strongest suit. I scored an 800 on the Reading portion of the SAT when I was in high school. I have developed public speaking skills by working with students on leadership qualities and by running a classroom of my own. I enjoy creative writing, and I recently attended a writer's conference at the Iowa Summer Writing Festival.
I took Spanish classes throughout high school and college, and I studied abroad in Bolivia for a semester during college (full immersion experience - I lived with a native host family and our program classes were conducted all in Spanish). I have also spent several months combined in Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. I love to share my experiences with students to help students get excited about using the language and the possibility of travel and employment opportunities!
I taught middle school Reading and Language Arts in public schools, and each year I had inclusion Special Needs students in my classes. I worked with the Special Ed Intervention Specialist to develop strategies to reach students with different levels, needs, and learning styles. I also learned how to assess learning progress with special needs students and how to adjust instructional strategies to maximize learning for every student.
