Bible Studies

Both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible are "manageable" material if you know how to approach them. Though they cover thousands of years of human history, these 66 books touch universal needs and present solutions to problems we all face.

Though I myself have done 10 years of graduate level studies in Bible, I have found that the Bible is accessible to anyone who wants to know what it says.

Public Speaking

As a teacher (college mostly, some high school teaching as a substitute) and a preacher, I have been speaking in public for forty years. I also listen, critically, to others who speak, and have a sense of what works at grabbing and holding people's attention.

Thus my "take" on public speaking is from a pragmatic, more than a "trained professional," perspective.

At the University of Phoenix, where I have facilitated classes regularly since 2006, all students are required to make classroom presentations twice every five weeks, normally using Power Point to enhance their presentations. I both evaluate these, constantly, and give students feedback on how to better convey their material to an audience. So my focus is on the business or persuasive world of communication.

Also, as a former missionary, I communicated with supporting churches in fund-raising, informative, and motivational presentations nightly, for about 20 weeks of three different given years, five years apart.

At a pastoral training college in Africa I taught public speaking to candidates for church ministry.

Religion

I have been teaching Religions of Asia (Hinduism, Buddhism, Tao and Confucius, and Shinto), and the three principal monotheist religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, regularly and consistently for the past 6 years at the University of Phoenix.

My own convictions and doctoral training are in the Christian faith, and I have taught both Bible and theology on the college level for over ten years.

In the study and teaching of non-Christian religions my intention is to understand the way other fellow human beings think and how this effects their way of life. There is usually much of value in the thought of others, even if one is not persuaded to "convert" to the other's religion or become an adept in it.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
