ESL/ESOL

I am TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certified. The TEFL course of study overlaps with ESL and ESOL curriculum. I have been able to put these teaching methods and approaches into effect, working as a volunteer for the past two and a half years in an ESL conversation classroom at Literacy Chicago, where I have taught students from many different backgrounds and varied learning levels. My lessons have been thorough and cover grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and speaking-- all in a relaxed and engaging setting. I want my students to succeed while feeling at ease with their 2nd language.

Reading

I have a BS degree in Business Communications with Minors in Marketing and Communications. I am TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certified, which requires knowledge of the methods and approaches to facilitate the process of teaching reading as well as grammar functions and rules. I work one on one, in addition to group settings with ESL students of many nationalities at Literacy Chicago, teaching all areas of English including reading. My lessons are engaging in a relaxed setting.

TOEFL

I am certified to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL). I have been working with non-native English speakers one on one and in group settings for over a year at Literacy Chicago. I lived internationally for 8 years and feel very comfortable with different cultures. I have been studying a foreign language myself for the last few years and have a great understanding and empathy for students needs in learning a new language. I want my students to succeed while feeling at ease.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
