I've been teaching and tutoring for fifteen years. In 2012, I began tutoring full-time and have my own business.
My greatest skill is helping students gain confidence, motivation and a genuine interest in learning. I believe that everyone likes to learn, but sometimes the pressures of school and the education system start to take that away. I spend a great deal of time outside of my tutoring hours thinking about how best to help each student. For example, some students truly do need more practice with the material and need to complete exercises, worksheets and the like. Other students need me to bring examples other than what school and their teacher provides - this can be especially true with math. Some students need a confidence boost.
I am a huge believer in reading and will always try to find books to recommend your child read. School is focused on the classics, and while this is great, I think students need to first enjoy reading and find high-interest books. I write young adult fiction and am familiar with many great titles out there.
My degrees are in English, but I was an A student in all subjects. I am able to confidently teach k-12 reading, writing, social studies, geography and study skills. I can also teach algebra and geometry.
If you are looking to get a head start on test prep with the ACT or SAT, I have experience teaching this to small groups and individuals. Typically, students need some content review, but they also need to better understand what answers work best for these tests. Often just a few tutoring sessions can greatly help a student do well on these tests. I would recommend three to four 90 minutes one-to-one sessions over taking a class, as the material can be tailored to your teen's needs.
As for my personality, I am friendly with a good sense of humor. When I taught high school, students always thought of me as a compassionate and creative teacher. Parents with students with disabilities frequently requested me as their child's teacher.
I tutor in the Western Suburbs - from Oak Park to Lombard. If you are out of this region, I can meet at a coffee shop or library.
I am currently taking students for the summer to review and get ahead. I can structure a program based on your child's needs.
