I am a certified language arts teacher and have been teaching and tutoring for 15 years. I taught for four years in suburban public schools, one year at a college resource center (tutoring all subjects), two years for Huntington Learning Center (grades k-12, including test prep), and five years at a college prep high school in Wheaton. Additionally, I worked as a paralegal for four years, using Microsoft computer applications. I can give you references, locations and my teaching credential number for you to check upon request!
Over the years, I have worked with students from many different cultural backgrounds, students for whom English was a second language, students with learning and behavioral challenges, and honors students. I have a wide range of experience!
I currently tutor students in grades k through 11 in all subject areas. I also help adult students earn their GEDs or prepare for tests they need to take for graduate school or professional certifications. My personal favorite areas to tutor in are reading, writing, algebra, geometry and history. I can recommend books for any age/grade level!
Not only can I help with tutoring, I can also point you or your child to online resources that can really help with additional practice.
If you are looking to get a head start on test prep with the ACT or SAT, I have experience teaching this to small groups and individuals.Often just a few tutoring sessions can greatly help a student do well on these tests. I would recommend three to four 90 minutes one-to-one sessions over taking a class, as the material can be tailored to your teen's needs. Typically, I do not tutor the ACT for longer than 6-8 weeks. A minimum of 4 weeks is required - I do not do "rush" tutoring the week before the test, as it does not work and I do not feel it is ethical to take your money for something that will not do much good!
As for my personality, I am friendly with a good sense of humor. When I taught high school, students always thought of me as a compassionate and creative teacher. Parents with students with disabilities frequently requested me as their child's teacher.
I prefer to tutor in my home in Brookfield, as I have a plethora of learning materials on hand with little distractions, but I can also meet in a library or your home if the location is within a 15-20 minute drive from Brookfield.
If you have multiple children needing help in different subject areas, requiring meetings longer than an hour, we can work together to find a schedule and rate that makes sense for your family.
Keep in mind that WyzAnt will ask for payment info up front, and this is partly to ensure the tutor's safety - a lot of us are young women meeting people over the Internet! But if you desire a phone meeting or short meeting in person at a local coffee shop to see if I am a good fit for you or your family, there will be no charge.
I currently have a young child so have limited tutoring hours - Sunday mornings and Wednesday and Friday evenings.
