If you need help with English, I'm the tutor for you! My background includes a passion for language learniing, and a genuine appreciation for all my students, their cultures, their language, their dialect, and their rhetorical style. For thirty years, I have taught ESL in universities (Loyola and deVRY) and community-based programs. I have served as the ESL Coordinator for two programs (Allentown Literacy Council and SouthEast Asia Center), and have instructed Business English (Bennett and Associates). My students have come from all over the world, including Latin America and the Caribbean, Eurasia, Japan, China, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Many have arrived as immigrants, with no knowledge of English. Others have arrived to study in the universities in the United States already speaking and writing English well. Some have been illiterate in their native language; others have advanced degrees from schools in their native countries. An all cases, their objectives have been different. Some students have wanted to learn enough English to survive living in the United States. Others have wanted to enter graduate programs here. Others have wanted to reduce their accent in speakiing and in their writiing style. Over the years, I have discovered that the best method of instruction is to begin with what the student already knows and to focus on clear objectives. My lessons are generated from the combination of (1)knowledge of English and language I have gleaned from linguistics (2) the cultural and language/dialect background of the student, and teaching techniques that are effective and efficient.
I grew up in Latin America and am bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English. My lessons in Spanish are fun and interactive; I particularly like working with parents who wish to give their children a bilingual and biliterate background.
My education has provided me with a love of history. I believe that history can be relevant and enjoyable and a joy to study.
