Accounting

I can help students with basic financial or managerial accounting, but I am not a specialist in this subject. I use accounting data a great deal in finance applications. I am not a CPA, and I have not worked as an accountant in my career, but, I am familiar with basic financial accounting techniques, and I have helped several students with this subject matter. Generally, I ask that students email me questions with which they need help before we meet, just in case I need to review that particular material.

Algebra 1

I started off my college career as a math major at Washington University in St. Louis. I am very good at algebra and can generally be helpful to those students who are highly motivated to improve their skills in this area.

Algebra 2

I have taken many math courses in my academic career, and I have helped many students get through algebra related topics. However, I am at my best with highly motivated students who seriously want to learn the subject matter.

Economics

I can help - and have helped - students, even at the graduate level, with basic or managerial economics, but I am not a specialist in this subject. I have taken about eight courses in economics at the college level. I use economics a great deal in finance applications. Generally, I ask that students email me questions with which they need help before we meet, just in case I need to review that particular material.

Finance

I have taught many finance course at Northwestern University's School for Continuing Studies since September 1989 as an adjunct lecturer. I currently (at various times throughout the academic year) teach courses in the introduction to finance using M.S. Excel, investment theory, financial institutions and markets, and corporate finance. Many students with bachelor degrees (some with PhDs) have taken my courses. I have tutored many students, including graduate students, in this subject matter.

Precalculus

I started off my college career as a math major. Although that was a long time ago, I have helped several students with their pre-calculus courses. The precalculus student that I helped just last academic year went from getting Cs and Bs in her tests to As. She got an "A" in her last course, and she was extremely happy with the results. Since then, I have continued reviewing pre-calculus material and I expect to do so for a long time - it is a subject I enjoy a great deal. I am now working on learning how to use the graphing calculator (TI-84) for pre-calculus problems. I prefer that students send me copies of the problems that they are having difficulty with before we meet, so that their time and money is not wasted.

Probability

I have earned credit for more than twenty courses in probability and statistics, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, I worked for more than thirty years as an actuary, where I frequently used probability concepts in pricing various life insurance policies. For these reasons, I believe that I can help you understand how to solve your probability problems.

Statistics

I have two degrees with majors in statistics - one a BSBA from UIC and the other an MBA from the University of Chicago. Altogether, I have taken more than 20 courses in statistics at both the undergraduate and graduate level. One of the courses, in econometrics, was at the PhD level. I have used statistical software for these courses, but I am most comfortable with use of either M.S. Excel or Minitab. I am not proficient at the use of SPSS, although I have used it somewhat. If you need heavy use of SPSS in your course, it would be best if you found another tutor who is much more familiar with that than I. For help in pure statistics at the introductory level, I know my stuff.

Excellent tutor, responsive, and extremely knowledgeable — Unfortunately, I did not rate every lesson session but would give Bill 5 stars for all sessions. Bill is an excellent tutor in all aspects as he truly cares about his students and does all he can to help them do well. He even let my daughter borrow his calculator for her AP Statistics Exam, which was extremely generous of him to do so. He is extremely responsive to all communications and very fle ...
