I am a certified teacher for grades K-8. I earned my teaching certificate from Elmhurst College and a Masters in Reading through National Louis University. I am currently a Reading Teacher at Pietrini School in Franklin Park, IL.
Reading and writing are complementary subjects that, when studied together, deepen comprehension, skill and learning. As you read, always be on the lookout for lines or passages that jump out or speak to you. If you can write in your book, underline, star, or highlight these passages. If you can’t, use small Post-It notes or just keep track of page numbers and identifying words on a separate piece of paper. Keep in mind that a response to literature paper is YOUR personal response to a novel or story. Basically, you are arguing your own point and then defending this point with evidence from the book. I can help students learn skills to organize their thoughts while reading in order to create a strong written statement that will grab a readers attention.
I have a graduate degree in reading from National Louis University. My studies included phonological awareness for beginning and emergent readers. My work experience also includes teaching phonics using a variety of methods and programs. I am skilled at teaching letter-sound correspondences and spelling patterns and with helping students apply this knowledge in their reading.
As a Reading Teacher, I am experienced with
•Conducting assessments to determine student reading levels
•Creating reading plans to match student ability and learning styles
•Guiding children through reading and writing activities to help them overcome obstacles to literacy
•Consulting with parents and teachers to recommend at-home strategies to improve reading skills
I am currently teaching study skills and textbook skills to students who need additional support. I help students with organizing their schedules, with proper note- taking techniques to prepare for tests, and with test taking strategies. I teach students about the different textbook features and how they help in determining what is important. As a result, student become more organized and independent in managing their work loads.
I love teaching vocabulary! I like to teach new words in context to reading. By looking at clues the author has provided, students guess the meaning of words they don't know. I teach strategies to help them determine the unknown words meaning and if the word can not be defined we look it up and then reread to clarify. Learning vocabulary in context helps students synthesize text to better understand what they have read. This is an important skill they will use for a lifetime.
I like to inspire young writers by tapping into each student's creativity and encouraging them to think critically about topics with focused writing activities. Activities will include generating ideas, organizing their thinking, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions. I will also focus on the writing process stressing the importance of prewriting, writing, editing, revising, and publishing and exciting finished piece.
