Are you looking for a tutor to help your child grow to reach his or her true potential in one or more areas? Since 1992, I have invested in kids' lives as a private school instructor, substitute teacher, children's ministry volunteer teacher, junior-high and elementary-school athletics coach and as a writer, editor and communicator at Awana Clubs International, the world's largest youth and children's ministry. My varied teaching, coaching, professional and volunteer experiences give me the versatility to work with a wide range of children and youth in a variety of subjects. I can serve your student through teaching English, grammar, spelling, reading, history, creative writing, journalism, elementary-school math, Bible and elementary-school science among other subjects.

If your son or daughter is interested in learning or developing in sports, I can even teach basketball and volleyball thanks for 15 years of experience as head volleyball and basketball coach at Faith Christian Academy in Geneva, IL, where my teams have amassed a record of 647 wins and 338 losses.

I look forward to helping your child learn, grow and excel as God intended!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I have coached the boys and girls basketball programs at Faith Christian Academy in Geneva, IL, for 15 years. I work with students in grades 5 to 8. My teams have amassed a combined record of 414 wins and 296 losses over that span.

Bible Studies

I have written Bible-based curriculum for Awana Clubs International for third to sixth grades as well as for our preschool program. I have also taught the Bible for 20 years as a children's ministry teacher for first to fifth grades at Christ Community Church in St. Charles, IL. I also co-wrote a Christian parenting blog for four years and have taught the Bible as part of my coaching responsibilities for 15 years at Faith Christian Academy in Geneva, IL.

Elementary (K-6th)

Besides raising two children who are now in eighth grade, I was a substitute teacher in the Carpentersville, IL, school district, working with students from preschool through eighth grade in such subjects as language arts, reading, spelling, math and science.

Phonics

I taught my own children how to read using the phonetic method. Phonetics is the best method for teaching reading to younger children. It is a matter of emphasizing the basics of reading and then patiently working with the child to give that child the building blocks to grow into a confident reader. I was also a substitute teacher in the Carpentersville, IL, school district, working with students from preschool through eighth grade.

Proofreading

I have eight years of experience proofreading copy as a newspaper editor. I have 15 years of experience proofreading brochures, catalogs, articles, ads, fliers, white papers, websites and books as an editorial supervisor and manager at a non-profit international organization. Finally, I have one year of experience editing on a freelance basis.

Religion

I have written religious curriculum for preschool and for third to sixth grades for Awana Clubs International, a para-church ministry. I also co-wrote a Christian parenting blog and have taught the Bible as part of my coaching responsibilities at Faith Christian Academy in Geneva, IL, for 15 years.

Social Studies

I originally planned to major in history in college. I have a deep love of history and social studies. I would be happy to pass along this passion for this subject to students.

Study Skills

I have helped my daughters develop into A-B honor roll students at one of the most rigorous academic schools in the Chicago suburbs. They are now both in eighth grade. I have specific habits that I teach children that help them build the necessary study skills to excel academically.

Volleyball

I have coached the volleyball program at Faith Christian Academy in Geneva, IL, for nine years. I have worked with students in grades 5 to 8. My volleyball teams at Faith Christian have a combined record of 233 wins and 42 losses in nine seasons.
