Why am I interested in tutoring? First, because of my own educational background. Through high school I was an independent study student; I was under the supervision of an accredited high school, but free to choose (with my parents, both of whom were teachers themselves) my own study programs, teachers, and curriculum. I participated in a variety of learning methods: co-operative study groups, video classes, regular classroom learning, as well as private tutoring. What these methods, particularly tutoring, gave to me was the ability to learn at my own pace, to fully grasp material before moving on; the chance to learn using methods that best suited my learning ability (for example, mastering grammar through extensive reading and practice rather than only memorizing sets of rules); and the love of learning apart from a competitive grade system. I graduated from high school, and then later with a bachelor's and master's degree without ever losing that deep love of learning. As a teacher, my desire is always to share that passion for learning with my students, and I feel tutoring is one of the most effective methods by which to accomplish this.
A second reason I am interested in tutoring has come from years of teaching in a classroom setting. I have taught public speaking 101 for two years at Bob Jones University, and oral and written EFL for 4 years at Jilin University of Finance and Economics. Though I have loved, and continue to love the experience of teaching in a classroom, I have also realized that not every student can maximize his or her potential in a classroom setting. As fervently as I as a teacher have tried to meet each student's personal education needs and styles, I have felt the limits that a classroom provides with such a gap in student-teacher ratio and challenges of diverse student needs. For this reason, I have always provided extra personal tutoring to any of my students who needed or desired additional assistance.
My formal teaching experience has been on the university level teaching public speaking and EFL, and I have tutored extensively with both subjects. I also have a passion for English literature. I devoured all types of literature as a child, and minored in English in my undergraduate studies. Unofficially, I frequently helped both high school and university classmates and friends in talking through and understanding literature works, figuring out grammar rules, and writing papers and essays. Though it would have been easier, I never merely corrected mistakes or rewrote papers for them. Instead, I worked to help them understand rules and writing methods and enable them to correct and rewrite themselves. Seeing the light go on in their eyes when they could personally understand and their satisfaction in personally accomplishing the tasks was hugely rewarding for me.
I look forward to continuing the joy of tutoring in the subjects of Public Speaking, EFL, and English, working with individual students to meet individual needs, seeing each one come to understand and even enjoy the learning process!
I have taken Bible classes, attended Sunday school, church services, and Bible studies since elementary school.
At Bob Jones University, I took a number of core Bible classes including Old Testament and New Testament survey courses, Bible Poetry, the Bible as Literature, Pauline Epistles, Biblical Role of Women, and Bible Doctrines.
I read the Bible frequently for personal devotions.
I often read commentaries or other books explaining biblical teachings.
I have a BA and MA in Speech Communications. During the two years of my graduate study, I also had full teaching and grading responsibilities for several sections of Public Speaking 101. This is my favorite subject to teach; I love seeing previously hesitant students gain confidence in this necessary skill area.
My field of study, both on the undergraduate and masters level, was Speech Communications. I taught Sp 101 for 2 years while a masters student.
