I teach with a belief that everyone has a unique set of talents that can be nurtured. Kindness and compassion along with goal setting and monitoring need to be blended into a positive experience for each person. I was a teacher of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders in Schaumburg for thirty-four years. Since retirement I was V.P. of a small business, managing office rentals and finances.

I found that I missed the positive experience of teaching and have decided to re-initiate that experience working as a tutor for individuals of any age. As a guitar player in a charity rock band and as an advanced computer user, I have something to offer many people.

This new one-to-one connection will allow me to insure increased value to students. I have been using available time since my retirement to learn about changes in the world since I began. 39 years ago. Now, as your tutor, I plan to revel in the opportunity to assist each new student with professional planning and lesson-management skills targeting specific needs on an individual basis.

Vocabulary

A student learns to build and grow quickly when, working with a tutor, the proofreading process involves the exploration of words in a way never imagined by the student. My goal, as tutor, is to assist the student in investigating the opportunities existing in the piece he or she is writing.

Grammar

As a lifetime educator in the United States and having earned all my educational credentials listening to, writing, and processing using the English Language, I use and can correct and teach grammar issues.

Microsoft Excel

Having used Microsoft Excel to create grading systems for use in the classroom, making financial sheets for small business and using macro’s to automate calculations, and having instructed students in the usage of Excel, I feel competent to tutor beginning to intermediate Excel users.

General Computer

Having been a Microsoft Windows user since 1.0 and having taught computer skills to children and adults using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, I have assisted many to acquire computer skills since the 1980’s. Also working in private industry summers doing consulting allows me to understand and adjust learning to a broad spectrum of adults as well as children.

Microsoft Word

Tutoring a student in Word requires an initial valuation of the students general computer skill level. Cut and Paste, Using a mouse, and scrolling are skills that must be addressed before anything else. If the computer is a brand new tool for the student, general computer skills instruction is necessary if independent usage of the program is a goal. Having co-taught a writing class specially adapted to my fourth grade students for two years, I am prepared to teach writing skills to ESL students in a particularly effective way. The adaptive procedure blends in student one-on-one interviews to assist them in gaining the confidence necessary to be adapting their unique background to the core curriculum.

Geography

I taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grade social studies for thirty-four years and read National Geographic Magazine at my grandparents for many years. I have always been interested and studied for a long time.

Teaching the use of the language requires a personal mastery of it by oneself before trying to teach it. Not being able to recognize correct speech and giving improper instruction can be harmful to the student. A tutor needs to have adequate confidence and experience before attempting.
