As a self-proclaimed professional knowledge seeker, I've had the opportunity to pursue a variety of jobs, education and experiences that have allowed me to effectively help all walks of life. I consider myself to be highly perceptive and adaptable to the many different learning styles and approaches. There is no one size fits all in regard to understanding the world around us and also ourselves. My areas of expertise and ability to empower you come from my arsenal of experiences:
My Writing, Editing, Reading, Vocab Background:
I hold a Bachelor's of Science in News-Editorial Journalism from the prestigious University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Outside of my rigorous academic training, I took jobs writing feature and investigative articles for the Daily Illini and Buzz Magazine. I've had pieces, including a cover story, published in our local St. Charles Republican Newspaper.
While in pursuit of my Master's of Education at the University of Texas at Austin, I became well-versed in the scientific and scholarly style of writing. I have written more than 150 pages worth of advanced research papers and thesis formulations during my three years at the university. As a sort of break from the formal world of academia, I became the primary copy-editor and staff writer for Austin Fit Magazine, a health and fitness magazine with a circulation of over 60,000.
My GRE, Graduate, College Prep Background:
As a graduate student, I had the opportunity to serve four semesters as an upper-division teaching assistant for a class of over 60 students. I've helped many future doctors, dietitians and psychologists prepare for the daunting task of taking the GRE. This included not only reviewing the material, but also stress and time management to ensure a clear and confident head on test day.
In fact, I know the tricks of the GRE trade better than I did when I was a graduate student. It was only a month ago that I recently took the GRE, the new 2011 version, a second time as I'm applying to go back to school for my third advanced degree in clinical social work and counseling. This means I have first hand experience of what to focus on, how to prepare, types of questions on the test, the new format, the test-taking experience and all the fun stuff.
My Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology, Sociology Background:
The University of Texas at Austin offered a wonderful hybrid master's degree that combined an education of physiology, health education, human behavior and psychology. I also extended my degree by an extra semester so that I could truly soak in as much as possible and feel confident in my ability to help my undergraduate students understand similar material.
My intense academic experience allowed me to not only educate more effectively but opened up doors into therapeutic roles. I've been a health behavior mentor for the nationally recognized weight loss camp Wellspring featured in Style Network's documentary "Too Fat For Fifteen." Currently, I do group therapy and health education classes at a medical weight-loss clinic. This has allowed me to put all of my knowledge from psychological theories to physiological effects into real-world practice.
My Public Speaking, Career Development, Personal Empowerment Background:
When I'm not tutoring, I am presenting at The Center for Health and Nutrition, a growing medical weight-loss clinic. I've been public-speaking and offering motivational skills to a vast array of audiences for more than six years. I know the tricks to stay calm, focused and flexible while delivering an effective and powerful speech.
I understand the corporate and business world, both as a former marketing manager and as a wellness consulting mentor at 3M's Health Program. I have helped employees from all "levels" of a the company learn to set compelling goals, harness internal self-efficacy and confidence, manage stress, identify personal strengths and weaknesses, and recognize motivators.
Thank you for taking the time to peruse my profile. Do not hesitate to contact me: I am always happy to answer any questions regarding my background and areas of expertise prior to our tutoring appointment.
