Hi, my name is Mary and I have taught for over 8 years at the elementary level. I recently received my MA through Lewis University in reading and literacy. My passion is reading and books!
As for being a tutor, a tutored students from pre-kindergarten to age 12 for 3+ years in reading, vocabulary, phonics, and writing at a local agency. Now I am beginning as an independent tutor.
You may be asking, “What can she do for my child?” Since I am a reading specialist, I can determine your child’s independent and instructional reading levels. With that information, I will be able to design personalized reading and writing tutoring sessions for your child. Given that reading and writing skills develop simultaneously, we will focus on writing as well. In addition, I will incorporate various reading comprehensions strategies, such as text connections, questioning, visualizing, and determining importance, to help your child understand what he/she is reading and delve further into the text.
My hope is that your child will begin to enjoy reading and find that it can be fun, too.
