Hello! I am a certified Elementary Teacher with three years of full-time classroom experience (kindergarten through second grade) and an additional five years of experience working with students in grades preschool through eighth as a substitute teacher and tutor. I possess extensive training in Reading and Phonics. Additionally, I have worked with students with special needs and conditions including autism, speech delays, ADD/ADHD, BD, English as a second language, and developmental delays. I am very student-centered and detail-oriented. My style of teaching incorporates simple, direct language, reviewing what has been covered and building upon that, and using a variety of tools such as auditory, visual, and kinesthetic aids. I reflect on every lesson, making adjustments as needed in order to help each student achieve optimal learning results. Lifelong learning is very important to me and I thoroughly enjoy helping my students to become lifelong learners.

Reading

I have over three years of classroom experience teaching reading and over 5 years of reading tutoring experience. I have used guided reading, running records, and multiple teaching techniques for reading. I believe that reading needs to be taught using an integrative literacy-based approach with phonics, vocabulary, writing, listening, comprehension, and spelling included. Reading needs to begin with basic building blocks and a strong foundation.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an elementary teaching certificate for grades kindergarten through five. My experience includes teaching three years for grades kindergarten, one, and two. I also substitute taught and tutored for grades preschool through eighth. My tutoring experience includes tutoring math, reading, and writing. I am highly qualified in reading. I have performed district and state testing and know how to administer running records.

Phonics

My experience teaching phonics includes my three years of full-time teaching in grades kindergarten through second. We used Heggerty phonics and the Storytown Literacy Program. Phonics was taught explicitly, with demonstration of sound-letter correlations. I currently use phonics in my tutoring in order to help emergent readers to become more efficient at decoding words.

Study Skills

As a teacher and tutor, I have gained experience in assisting students to acquire good study skills. I promote the benefits of rereading, reading more carefully, highlighting important text, note taking, and making flashcards. I instruct my students on how to read with a purpose and how to summarize.

Swimming

Swimming is not only a fitness hobby of mine, but also an area in which I have great experience. I have two years of work experience as a swim instructor for children ages infant through beginner (level 1 and 2) and three years of experience as a lifeguard. Furthermore, I swam competitively for three years.

Cooking

My experience in cooking primarily includes cooking meals and recipes for my family. I can cook a multiple course meal, prepare several dishes simultaneously, and make up original recipes. Recently, I created my own turkey and rice stew. I can cook or prepare a variety of dishes including lasagna, apple pie, stew, stir-fry, grilled/marinated meats, scalloped potatoes, homemade fries, fruit salad, and casseroles.
