Hello potential students! My name is Nicholas P., and I'm ready to help those who wish to learn more about English. I'm a recent graduate of Roosevelt University with a Professional Educators License. I am certified to teach at a high school or middle school level, and have had experience tutoring both. I student taught at a private Catholic high school for six months, and before that I tutored middle school students for three weeks. During my student teaching experience, I taught language arts to two classes of sophomores and American literature to two classes of juniors. My experience is not limited to adolescents however, as I have also tutored adults through an English language learning program called Read to Learn.
My personal style of teaching is based on the principle that learning should be student centered, not teacher centered. In order to get students to learn what they need to know, I need to fit my lessons around their personal strengths, interests, and learning styles. If the lesson plan is more accessible to the student, it can become more fun. When students are enjoying themselves, they are more likely to integrate the information. I look forward to the task of tailoring a unique lesson to the needs of my students, and I hope to begin soon!
I could source a public speaking course I took during college, but I believe my experience as a student teacher is the best reference I can give. For six months I stood in front of bored, tired, distracted teenagers, and it was my job to educate and inspire through my words. I learned many tricks through trial and many errors; duration of speeches, proper use of visual aids, using humor, and how to fully utilize ethos, pathos, and logos. I knew when a speech was successful when I had shy students laughing and bored students asking questions. I hope to pass these lessons on so that the student doesn't have to learn the hard way.
