I love teaching and look forward to sharing and promoting the fascination and wonder of the sciences with young minds everywhere, one student at a time, and have thoroughly enjoyed spending hundreds of hours discussing science with both teens and adults through WyzAnt. Teaching is second nature for me, growing up in a family where both parents were high school teachers. My father taught biology for 30 years, which helped fuel my passion and enthusiasm for the sciences and motivated my pathway to a B.S. in biology from Purdue University.

Rewarding teaching begins with that passion and energy for the subject matter. It requires detailed preparation, careful listening, patience, solid communication, and genuine care for the student’s success, in addition to a great command and understanding of the material. Vibrant visual aids and modern, real-world examples help keep students engaged and interested even when discussing challenging material. However, it’s key to tailor and adapt the teaching style to the strengths, weaknesses, and goals of each student and build their confidence--we work together.

Spending a decade as a physician assistant honed my teaching skills, especially in one-on-one type settings. Patient education is an essential concern in the medical field. When patients enter clinics with diverse science backgrounds, it forces healthcare providers to create and develop alternative methods of teaching the same science topics to ensure that every patient who walks in has a good understanding and explanation of their condition.

Feel free to browse my background and student feedback for a better understanding and feel for my work with WyzAnt students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

Human Anatomy is one of my favorite science topics, ever since I first thoroughly encountered the subject during my undergraduate Biology coursework at Purdue University. My understandings were furthered and deepened through The University of Iowa College of Medicine’s Physician Assistant program, where I worked with full human cadavers. Finally, my professional experience as an Illinois state-licensed Physician Assistant for 10 years hinged on mastering the principles and details of Human Anatomy, where I utilized them daily as an integral part of my daily work in practical, useful applications to enhance the health of others.

Biology

I am well versed in all biology topics, my knowledge derived from a B.S. in biology from Purdue University and then adding twenty more hours of post-graduate coursework in biology from ISU. My medical training from The University of Iowa College of Medicine enhanced my understanding of biology's concepts and provided real world applications for my science education. In my spare time, I've complemented my science background with numerous science courses from nearly all of the local colleges and have thoroughly enjoyed spending hundreds of hours teaching the concepts of standard High School Biology, AP Biology, and also college-level biology through WyzAnt.

Botany

I am well versed in Botany, my understanding derived from my B.S. in Biology from Purdue University and then adding post-graduate studies from ISU, where I enrolled in more Botany-related coursework. At Purdue, I majored in Ecology for two years, which included a significant amount of instruction in Botany, before deciding to expand my focus into General Biology.

Ecology

Ecology is a passion of mine, even majoring in the subject for two years at Purdue University, which provided me with a wonderful understanding of the concepts and principles of Ecology before deciding to expand my focus into General Biology. I enrolled in more Ecology courses as part of my post-graduate studies in Biology from ISU with additional Ecology coursework from local area colleges in my spare time.

Genetics

I am well versed in Genetics, my knowledge derived from courses in Genetics that were part of my B.S. in Biology from Purdue University, plus an important part of my post-graduate Biology coursework from ISU. My understanding of Genetics and its current applications was enhanced through The University of Iowa College of Medicine’s PA program, while its principles were incorporated into my decisions everyday as an Illinois state-licensed Physician Assistant for 10 years. Whether it’s Mendelian Genetics or special inheritance patterns, Genetic Disease, Molecular Genetics, Population Genetics, or even modern day Gene technology, the material can be truly fun if presented with the right approach and with the enthusiasm the subject deserves.

Microbiology

I am well versed in Microbiology, my understanding derived from courses in Microbiology that were part of my B.S. in Biology from Purdue University, plus an important part of my post-graduate Biology coursework at ISU. However, my understanding of Microbiology and its current applications was significantly enhanced through The University of Iowa College of Medicine’s PA program. The principles and concepts of Microbiology were incorporated into my decisions everyday as an Illinois state-licensed Physician Assistant for 10 years, especially when treating patients with infectious disease.

Pharmacology

Pharmacology is one of my favorite studies because of its close involvement with human anatomy and physiology. I scored within the top five in The University of Iowa’s College of Medicine for Pharmacology. Of course, I applied the principles of pharmacology in my everyday work as an Illinois state-licensed Physician Assistant in otolaryngology and gastroenterology, accompanied by a DEA license for schedule III-V controlled substances.

Physical Science

Physical science is usually a student’s introduction into the world of science and there is great satisfaction in unlocking that exciting world for them. Physical Science forms the scientific foundation for students that they’ll apply in their future Biology, Chemistry, and Physics courses. During my undergraduate years at Purdue University, I majored in Biology, minored in Chemistry, and excelled in two additional Physics courses.

Physiology

Human Physiology and Human Pathophysiology are some of my favorite science topics, ever since I first thoroughly encountered the subjects during my undergraduate Biology coursework at Purdue University. My understanding of Human Physiology and Pathophysiology was furthered through The University of Iowa College of Medicine’s PA program. Finally, my professional experience as an Illinois state-licensed Physician Assistant for 10 years hinged on mastering the principles and details of Human Physiology/Pathophysiology, where I utilized them daily as an integral part of my work in practical ways towards improving the health of other.
